Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 10 Blinn keeps undefeated season alive with sweeps of Brookhaven, Dodge City

The Buccaneers conclude the North Central Texas Tournament with matches against McCook, Western Texas on Saturday

Another early-season tournament spelled more success for the 10th-ranked Blinn College volleyball team Friday in Gainesville, Texas.

The Buccaneers powered past Dallas College Brookhaven (25-18, 25-18, 25-14) and Dodge City Community College (25-12, 25-22, 25-17) for a pair of sweeps on day one of the North Central Texas Tournament.

Blinn improved to 13-0 with its seventh and eighth sweeps of the season.

The Bucs played back-to-back matches and left head coach Gregg Whitis impressed with how they answered the challenge.

In the opener, Blinn went up against a tough Bears squad led by head coach Jason Hopkins.

Whitis said the Bucs' physicality – especially their blocking – proved to be the deciding factor in a competitive matchup, and lauded Brookhaven's effort on the hardwood.

"I have a lot of respect for Brookhaven and coach Hopkins, and he gets a lot out of his teams," Whitis said. "They are well-coached, and they made us work. They made it really difficult for us to score; they served us tough; and their floor defense and coverage was impressive."

Freshman hitter Annika Brooks paced the Bucs with 12 kills, while sophomore hitter Olivia Stringer tacked on nine.
Sophomore setter Leah Hoss and freshman setter Camden Bizot handed out 16 and 12 set assists, respectively.

At the service line, Hoss and sophomore middle blocker Jana Cetkovic tallied three aces apiece.

Defensively, Blinn tallied 38 digs, led by nine for sophomore hitter Kaliko Schilling, six for Stringer, five each for Bizot and freshman defensive specialist/libero Zoey Montgomery, and four for Hoss.

At the net, Schilling, sophomore hitter Shiloh Jones, and sophomore middle blocker Karolina Karabasz tallied one solo block apiece, while Karabasz and Brooks both recorded five block assists.

Blinn was operating under a tight schedule Friday and had little down time before returning to the court for its tilt with Dodge City.

Following an abbreviated warmup, the Bucs stormed out of the gate against the Conquistadors and built a 20-7 cushion in the opening set before finishing things off for a one-set lead.

"I was proud of the way we came out in that second match," Whitis said. "We had a good scouting report on Dodge City after watching them play Thursday night, and our team played to that scouting report."

Whitis said the Bucs served and blocked well in the first set, but played "loose" in the second set which allowed Dodge City to find some life.

"We had some issues with our serve receive and our setting, which led to some poor attacking and that meant we were moving the scoreboard for the other team," Whitis explained.

With his team trailing 20-15 in the second set, Whitis called time out and told his team better passing would give them a chance to rally, and the Bucs went back to the court and made it happen.

Stringer went on a run at the service line and didn't budge until her team rallied for a 21-20 lead.

"I was proud we didn't let go of the rope down 20-15," Whitis said. "Good players find ways to impact a match when maybe they're not playing well in certain areas, and that was the case with Olivia Stringer tonight. She didn't have her best day attacking, but she found other ways to help us."

Blinn fended off the Conquistadors in the final set to complete the sweep.

"Dodge City is a good team that has played a tough schedule, and they were ready to play us," Whitis said. "They have a middle blocker who gave us some problems; they have an opposite hitter who is long and physical; and they run a 5-1 rotation with a set who is active. It was crucial that we served them tough and I thought we did that, and when we were able to put two solid blockers in front of them at the net, we found ourselves in pretty good shape."

The Bucs got a team-high seven kills from Brooks and six each from Stringer and Jones. Karabasz had five kills and Cetkovic chipped in four. Hoss boosted the offense with 14 set assists.

At the line, Hoss served up five aces while Schilling knocked down four. Stringer added a pair.

Montgomery and Stringer protected the floor well to the tune of 10 and nine digs, respectively. Schilling and freshman libero Aly Frias each posted five.

The Bucs racked up 20 block assists, including nine for Cetkovic, four for Jones, and three for Brooks. Cetkovic also had a solo block.

Blinn concludes the North Central Texas Tournament on Saturday with a matchup against McCook Community College at 10 a.m., and a 2 p.m. clash with Western Texas College. The Bucs will look to earn their second win over Western Texas after picking up a four-set win over the Westerners on Aug. 29.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
