Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 10 Blinn sweeps through final day of North Central Texas Tournament to match best start since 2014

The Buccaneers defeated McCook and Western Texas on Saturday to improve to 15-0

Tenth-ranked Blinn College answered the challenge of another jam-packed weekend of volleyball the only way it has known how this season: By winning.

The Buccaneers capped the North Central Texas Tournament with sweeps of McCook Community College (25-13, 25-19, 25-19) and Western Texas College (25-18, 25-20, 25-21) on Saturday in Gainesville, Texas.

Blinn went 4-0 in Gainesville and moved to 15-0 on the year.

"I'm proud of the team," Bucs head coach Gregg Whitis said. "We found a way to win and grinded through a bunch of matches in two days. I'm happy with how we're finding ways to get the job done when we're not playing our best or some of our players are struggling."

Of Blinn's 15 matches this fall, 14 have been played at three weekend tournaments.

The schedule has done little to deter the Bucs, who are off to their best start since Blinn's 2014 national championship team also opened the year 15-0.

The Bucs began play Saturday with a hard-fought win over McCook.

Blinn totaled 39 combined kills and posted a solid .274 hitting percentage, including a robust .414 in the opening set.

Whitis said the key to both of the day's matches was his team's defense, specifically a combination of solid serving and strong blocking.

"We were serving it strategically and aggressively without making too many errors," the coach explained, "and behind the tough serving, we were able to put a block in front of hitters that has given opposing teams problems."

Offensively, sophomore hitter Olivia Stringer tallied a team-high 11 kills, with sophomore hitters Kaliko Schilling and Shiloh Jones adding seven apiece. Sophomore middle blocker Jana Cetkovic had six kills and freshman hitter Annika Brooks added five.

Sophomore setter Leah Hoss paced the Bucs with 19 set assists.

At the service line, Blinn racked up nine aces, boosted by four from Schilling and two apiece for Stringer and freshman setter Camden Bizot.

Hoss led the Bucs' floor defense with 12 kills.

At the net, Blinn amassed five solo blocks and 14 block assists. Stringer and Schilling each had two solos while Cetkovic had one. Cetkovic and Jones had four assists apiece.

Blinn's final match of the tournament was its first rematch of the season, as the Bucs completed a two-game sweep of Western Texas. Blinn defeated the Westerners in four sets on Aug. 29.

"Western have some kids on their team who, if you're not mindful of where they are on the floor, they can be effective against you," Whitis said. "Once again, we were able to find a way to weather some of our attacking mistakes. There are three ways to score in volleyball: Kills, aces, and blocks. We had a lot of aces and a lot of blocks today."

Against the Westerners, Blinn totaled 41 kills, with Schilling leading the way with 10. Cetkovic added eight, Jones registered seven, and Stringer tacked on six.

Bizot and Hoss had 20 and 16 set assists, respectively, while Bizot also had two of Blinn's five aces.

On the floor, Schilling had a team-leading 11 digs.

The Bucs' block was again strong with 12 block assists.

Cetkovic, who drew praise from Whiting for her effort across all four tournament matches, picked up four assists and one solo block. Stringer, Jones, and freshman middle blocker Kaylie McKinney had two assists apiece.

Blinn's season continues with the start of Region 14 play, beginning with a showdown against No. 20 Navarro College at 6 p.m. on Monday in Corsicana, Texas. The Bucs will then host No. 9 Trinity Valley Community College at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
