Gregg Whitis begins his second season as head coach of the Buccaneers following an impressive return to the NJCAA ranks.
In his first junior college season since 1997, Whitis guided Blinn to a 38-5 record in 2025, including a 12-2 mark in Region 14 play and a sixth consecutive appearance in the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship tournament.
Five Buccaneers earned Region 14 all-region honors, including three first-team selections. Sophomore outside hitter Olivia Stringer was named the region's Newcomer of the Year before earning first-team NJCAA All-America honors.
Fourteen players from the 2025 squad also earned scholarships to continue their careers at four-year institutions, including four NCAA Division I signees.
Whitis now owns an impressive 65-13 NJCAA record.
Whitis arrived at Blinn following a four-year stint as an assistant coach at New Mexico State University.
He brings more than 30 years of coaching experience, including more than 20 seasons at NCAA Division I programs such as New Mexico State, Arizona, Tennessee, Clemson, Michigan, Southern Methodist, Indiana State, and Appalachian State.
A respected recruiter and player developer, Whitis has served as recruiting coordinator at Tennessee, Clemson, Arizona, Michigan, New Mexico State, and Appalachian State.
Throughout his career, Whitis has recruited and coached numerous NCAA All-Americans while helping five different programs earn multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. He has also coached and/or recruited 10 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America selections.
In 2010, Whitis assembled a recruiting class at Tennessee that was ranked No. 4 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com and is widely regarded as the best in program history.
Whitis began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Indiana State from 1995-97 before serving as head coach at NJCAA member Kankakee Community College in 1997. In one season with the Cavaliers, Whitis posted a 27-8 record.
Whitis earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English education from Olivet Nazarene University in 1991. Whitis is a native of Bourbonnais, Ill.
