Late goal spoils Blinn's Region 14 road trip to LSU-Eunice

The Buccaneers host Western Texas at 6 p.m. on Sept. 30

The Blinn College women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with Louisiana State University-Eunice in a thrilling Region 14 showdown Saturday, but in the end fell just short in a 3-2 setback in Eunice, La.

The Buccaneers dropped to 4-3-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the region standings.

"This game was one of the most exciting of the year … an absolute barn burner," Blinn head coach Alexandria Jackson said. "We struck first and had chances to keep our foot on the gas, but every mistake and every moment matters; that's how competitive this league is."

The Bucs grabbed momentum early when sophomore midfielder Marguerite Funk scored on a free kick in the 12th minute.

After the Bengals tied the match on a tally in the 33rd minute, Blinn sophomore midfielder Rebecca Madrid scored an unassisted equalizer in the 55th.

Ultimately, the outcome came down to an LSU-Eunice goal late in the match, as the Bengals found the back of the Bucs' net in the 86th minute.

"Even though we didn't get the result, I'm very proud of this group," Jackson added. "We made some mistakes defensively that cost us goals, but mistakes happen in soccer — it's how we respond that will define us."

Blinn finished with six shots.

Bucs freshman goalkeeper Haidlyn Hawkins made seven saves.

Up next, Blinn takes a break from region play to host Western Texas College at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Rankin Field in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
