Blinn clinches second Region 14 South title with road win over LSU-Eunice

Chelsea Mentado sets Buccaneers’ single-season scoring record with game-winning goal

The Blinn College women's soccer team secured the second Region 14 South division championship in program history Friday with a 1-0 victory over Louisiana State University-Eunice in Eunice, Louisiana.

The Buccaneers improved to 8-4-1 overall and 7-3-1 in region play, clinching their second South title since 2023.

"We controlled our own destiny by being who we are, playing the way we play, and doing the things that got us here," Blinn head coach Alexandria Jackson said. "Tonight, we did exactly that, and it was a reflection of everything these players have poured into this season. I couldn't be prouder to be their coach."

Freshman forward Chelsea Mentado delivered the game-winning goal in the 55th minute, taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Chloey Mejia and finding the back of the net. The goal was Mentado's 10th of the season, establishing a new Blinn single-season scoring record.

"Chelsea setting the scoring record is a tremendous accomplishment and a testament to the work she has put in all season," Jackson said. "What makes it even more special is that she has done it while putting the team first. Records don't happen by accident; they are earned through consistency, discipline, and showing up every single day. I'm incredibly proud of Chelsea, not just for the goals she's scored, but for the player and teammate she has become. She deserves this moment."

The Bucs and Bengals finished even in shots at seven apiece, but Blinn made its lone goal stand to secure the championship-clinching victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Reese Cauthen recorded five saves to preserve Blinn's seventh shutout of the season. Cauthen improved to 7-3-1 on the year.

The Bucs will close out their regular season at home against Texas Southmost College in a Region 14 matchup at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Rankin Field in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
