No. 8 Blinn routs Otero before fending off No. 20 Amarillo in exciting finish

Sophomore Leah Hoss helped the Buccaneers defeat Amarillo in four sets with exceptional serving

The No. 8 Blinn College volleyball team capped off another dominant tournament performance with victories over Otero College and No. 20 Amarillo College at the Amarillo Tournament on Saturday in Amarillo, Texas.

The Buccaneers swept Otero 25-8, 25-12, 25-10 before outlasting a tough Amarillo squad 25-16, 25-21, 13-25, 26-24.

Blinn won its fourth consecutive match and improved to 20-1 on the season. The Bucs are 18-0 in tournament matches.

Blinn capped the two-day, four-match Amarillo Tournament with a competitive tilt with the host Badgers.

After the Bucs built a two-set lead, Amarillo took advantage of some Blinn hitting errors and serve receive miscues to take the third set.

With the exception of a 1-1 tie in the opening moments of the fourth, the Bucs played from behind for the entirety of the set and trailed 24-21 before regaining its footing with the help of clutch serving from sophomore setter Leah Hoss.

"One thing we do consistently better than our opponents so far this season is serve it tougher and make fewer service errors," Blinn head coach Gregg Whitis said. "Down 24-21, everyone is thinking we're going five sets except for our kids. Amarillo sided out and Leah stepped to the line and took complete control."

After Blinn won a rally to make it 24-22, Hoss stepped to the line and didn't leave until her team rallied for the win.

Sophomore hitter Olivia Stringer cut Amarillo's advantage to one with a kill from center court; Hoss delivered a serve to the Amarillo backcourt that the Badgers failed to return; another Hoss serve never returned to the Bucs' side after sophomore middle blocker Jana Cetkovic stuffed a block to give Blinn a 25-24 edge; and Hoss' final serve of the match was again met with an abrupt Cetkovic block for the victory.

"We played a lot of volleyball again this weekend, and today we played back-t0-back matches," Whitis explained. "We had some things to deal with, and I was pleased with how we responded and how competitive and locked in we were. We ended the day against an opponent who did everything they could to prepare for us and we found a way to get the job done."

Whitis praised the efforts of Amarillo's players, as well as his longtime friend and Badgers head coach Scott Sandel.

"Amarillo is a really, really well-coached team," Whitis said. "I have a great, longstanding history with Scott and he's doing a fantastic job over there."

For the match, Stringer led Blinn with 20 kills, while sophomore hitter Kaliko Schilling gave her team 12.

Hoss' impressive serving yielded six aces and was complemented by a team-high 23 set assists. Sophomore setter Camden Bizot added 18 set assists and a pair of aces.

On defense, Stringer paced the Bucs with 10 digs, followed by eight apiece for Bizot and freshman defensive specialist/libero Zoey Montgomery, and six each for Schilling and sophomore libero Aly Frias.

At the net, Cetkovic finished with one solo block and three block assists; Schilling had one solo block and one assist; freshman hitter Annika Brooks had three assists; and sophomore middle blocker Karolina Karabasz added two.

Blinn's first match Saturday saw the Bucs handle Otero swiftly.

Stringer produced a team-leading nine kills, Hoss and Bizot dished out 12 and 11 set assists, respectively, and Blinn served up 11 aces. Hoss and Bizot had two aces apiece.

From the floor, sophomore hitter Shiloh Jones tallied a team-best five digs. At the net, Jones, Schilling, and Karabasz had one solo block apiece, while Cetkovic and Jones chipped in four and three assists, respectively.

Up next, Blinn resumes Region 14 play when it visits Tyler Junior College at 6 p.m. on Monday in Tyler, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
