Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 11 Blinn sweeps Tyler on the road for second Region 14 victory

The Buccaneers are 21-1 overall and are riding a five-match winning streak

The 11th-ranked Blinn College volleyball team made a triumphant return to Region 14 play Monday night with a sweep of Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas.

The Buccaneers prevailed 25-20, 25-13, 25-20 to win their fifth consecutive match. They improved to 21-1 overall with a 2-1 mark in region play.

"I thought we played well tonight and controlled the entire match," Blinn head coach Gregg Whitis said. "We jumped on Tyler pretty early and played pretty steady in the first and second sets, and while we had a spot in the final set where we made some errors and some mistakes, we got it back together to finish it off there at the end."

The Bucs split their first two region matches of the season last week before taking each of its four contests at the Amarillo Tournament on Sept. 12-13.

With 22 matches across the first 26 days of the season, Blinn is in the midst of one of the busiest schedules in the NJCAA but has managed the heavy workload impressively.

"I'm really proud of how this group has handled the demands of our schedule," Whitis said. "The kids are playing hard; the kids are together; everybody's in. This is a good group."

The Apaches led just once, 2-1, in the first set before Bucs sophomore hitter Kaliko Schilling put a soft touch on a set from sophomore setter Leah Hoss and placed the ball in an empty spot on Tyler's court.

Schilling followed with a service ace and Blinn led the rest of the way.

The Bucs led the set 24-18 when the Apaches made a last-ditch effort to rally with two straight points, but Schilling snuffed out the comeback with a kill.

In set two, Blinn and Tyler played to an early 5-5 tie before the Bucs went on a 20-8 run to build a two-set advantage. Sophomore middle blocker Karolina Karabasz sealed the set for Blinn with a kill.

The Bucs built a 12-5 advantage to open the third set, but Tyler clawed back into it with the help of some Blinn miscues.

"Our kids sort of took turns taking mistakes there in the middle of the set," Whitis said, "but we found our way out of it, and I was proud of them for that."

The Apaches stayed within 3-4 points for the entirety of the set before the Bucs found space late. Ahead 21-18, Blinn pushed its lead to four when sophomore hitter Olivia Stringer banged a kill just inside Tyler's back line. The Apaches then spiked a ball into the net before Hoss served up an ace to set up match point for Blinn.

After Tyler showed life with a two-point burst, Stringer provided the exclamation point with a hard spike to the host's floor.

Stringer paced the Bucs with 15 kills and was followed by nine from sophomore hitter Kaliko Schilling. Sophomore hitter Shiloh Jones and freshman hitter Annika Brooks recorded six apiece.

Hoss finished with 17 assists, while sophomore setter and Tyler native Camden Bizot chipped in 16.

The Bucs' service has been one of the keys to their success this season, and that trend continued against Tyler as Blinn tallied seven aces.

"Our service pressure was good again tonight; we're constantly putting pressure on opposing passers," said Whitis, who recognized Schilling and Hoss as the catalysts for the Bucs' strong service. "It starts with those two, but as a team we work on our serving quite a bit. We serve it strategically, and because of that, we're a good area-serving team."

On defense, Stringer had 10 of her team's 47 digs. Freshman defensive specialist/libero Zoey Montgomery added eight; and Hoss and Schilling tacked on six apiece. At the net, Schilling, Karabasz, Brooks, and sophomore middle blocker Jana Cetkovic each recorded one solo block. Brooks and Karabasz registered three block assists apiece.

Up next, the Bucs will host region adversary Panola College at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
