No. 15 Blinn battles mighty LSU-Eunice to second consecutive doubleheader split

The Buccaneers will host No. 7 Trinity Valley for a twin bill April 3

No. 15 Blinn College softball once again went toe-to-toe with one of NJCAA Division II's top teams Saturday, earning another doubleheader split with Louisiana State University-Eunice at Hohlt Park in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers claimed a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Bengals in the opener before falling 12-6 in the finale.

Blinn moved to 20-10 overall after going 2-2 against LSU-Eunice across Friday and Saturday. LSU-Eunice – ranked eighth in the NJCAA Division II poll – entered the four-game set with a 17-0 record against Region 14 competition before arriving in Brenham.

"If you're looking ahead going into this weekend, splitting with a team like LSU-Eunice would have been an acceptable outcome," Blinn head coach Rick Church said. "I was hoping we'd have enough fire in our bellies to sweep them today, but we didn't get it done. Overall, we'll take it, but we still need to find the consistency needed to put together a string of wins."

Blinn secured the game-one victory with a dramatic seventh-inning rally that ended in a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.

After loading the bags with one out, sophomore catcher/third baseman Cadence Wiese was plunked to force in the winning run.

The walk-off finish came after the Bengals scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game.

LSU-Eunice opened the scoring in the first inning before Blinn took a 2-1 lead in the third. Freshman outfielder Presli Moebes led off with a single, and courtesy runner Avery Marquart advanced to second on an error, stole third, and scored on another error to tie the game. Sophomore outfielder Halle Scheel followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Bucs the lead.

In the fourth, sophomore first baseman Daniela Lopez extended Blinn's advantage to 3-1 with an RBI double.

The Bengals plated a run in the sixth, but Blinn answered in the bottom half on an RBI single from sophomore infielder Annie Beckendorf.

After LSU-Eunice tied the game in the seventh, the Buccaneers responded immediately. Freshman infielder Londyn Holland led off with a double and moved to third on freshman infielder Skylar Flanagan's single.
Following a fielder's choice that resulted in an out at the plate, freshman infielder Brianna Moreno singled to bring Wiese to the dish. On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, Wiese was hit on the elbow, allowing Flanagan to score the winning run.

"You can't ever tell yourself you're out of it," Wiese said. "Even after we gave up the lead and Eunice had the momentum, we believed we were going to get it done. That was a big moment for me, and I was just happy I was able to help my team."

Blinn totaled eight hits in the opener, including two from Flanagan.

Sophomore pitcher Madisyn Bracknell earned a no-decision despite a strong outing, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Sophomore Brynn Gallamore (11-5) recorded the final out of the seventh to earn the win.

In game two, Blinn jumped out early but LSU-Eunice used a big second inning to seize control and secure the split.

After the Bengals took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Buccaneers responded with three runs in the bottom half. LSU-Eunice answered with four runs in the second, added one in the fourth, and broke the game open with five in the sixth.

Blinn scored three runs in the sixth before LSU-Eunice added a final run in the seventh.

The Buccaneers finished with 10 hits.

Freshman utility player Lexis Moss led the way with two hits – including a solo home run in the sixth – and three RBIs. Beckendorf also homered in the sixth and finished with two hits.

Gallamore started and took the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) on two hits with three walks and one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings. Bracknell pitched four innings in relief, and freshman Jamison Wlos added 1 2/3 innings.

Blinn returns to action against Region 14 North foe and seventh-ranked Trinity Valley Community College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 3, in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
