Game Recap: Baseball |

Eddy no-hits Coastal Bend in game one as No. 6 Blinn cruises to sweep of Cougars

The Buccaneers tossed their second no-hitter in 15 days as pitching staff continues to thrive

At the beginning of the season, Dusty Hart predicted a strength of this year's Blinn College baseball team would be its pitching.

The sixth-ranked Buccaneers' are proving their head coach right on a game-by-game basis.

Blinn concluded a dominant start to Region XIV South play with an 8-0, 11-1 (five innings) doubleheader sweep of Coastal Bend College on Saturday at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham, Texas.

The two wins capped the Bucs' three-game sweep of the Cougars.

In its three matchups against Coastal Bend, Blinn (14-4 overall, 3-0 Region XIV South) outscored its opponent 28-1 and pitched two shutouts, including a game-one no-hitter from sophomore pitcher Brok Eddy on Saturday.

"We've been harping on our guys to play every pitch like it's a close game in the ninth inning, and I really felt like we did that in this series," Hart said. "We've been preaching about having high energy in each and every inning, and I thought this series was indicative of what this team is capable of when the players stay locked in and focused."

Eddy appeared to take his coach's message to heart.

The hard-throwing right-hander improved to 5-1 following his best outing of the spring thus far. He tossed 55 of his 85 pitches for strikes while punching out six Cougars and walking two, and lowered his earned run average to 2.35.

Throughout the ballgame, Eddy was also the beneficiary of strong defensive play, including a game-ending diving stop on a ground ball by freshman second baseman Benji Berrera in the top of the seventh frame.

"I felt great all game long, and I was mixing up my pitches – fastballs, curveballs, and sliders – to try and keep hitters off-balance," Eddy said. "And then our defense did a tremendous job and really saved me with some big plays."

Eddy's no-no was the first of his competitive baseball career dating back to high school. It was also Blinn's second no-hitter in the past 15 days. Saturday's game-two starter, freshman Hayden Morris, no-hit John Melvin University on Feb. 14. Blinn's starting pitchers have earned 10 of the club's victories this season while the entire staff boasts an impressive 3.70 team ERA and a .222 batting average against.

"Every guy on our staff works hard every day to get better, and we see that work show up on the mound every week," added Eddy.

Sophomore catcher Matt Quintanar has caught both of the Bucs' no-hitters this season.

Backing Eddy was Blinn's potent offense.

The Bucs came out firing right out of the gate with a three-run first inning. They added a single tally in the second before tacking on four in the third.

Freshman Drew Britton had two singles and drove in three runs, sophomore Bennett Fryman doubled as part of a two-hit game and drove in a run, and sophomore Lane Allen doubled and also plated a run. Sophomore Ryder McDaniel drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

The Bucs concluded the twin bill almost exactly as it started, with another impressive pitching performance and a stellar offensive showing.

Morris worked all five innings of the run-rule victory, allowing an unearned run on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. The tall, flame-throwing righty improved to 3-0 this spring.

"When you can throw out a guy like Brok Eddy and immediately follow that up with Hayden Morris, you feel pretty good about your chances every Saturday," Hart added. "Hayden did a phenomenal job of keeping Coastal Bend grounded and finishing out what we started today."

Blinn scored in bunches in game two, tallying four in the first frame and three in the third and fourth innings before McDaniel walked it off in the fifth with a solo home run.

Freshman Brady Sullivan hit a two-run homer in the third.

Fryman, who plays both ways, opened the series on the mound against the Cougars on Thursday and got Blinn's pitching dominance started with five shutout innings. On Saturday, he instead did damage with his bat, following up his solid stat sheet in game one with a monster showing in game two.

Fryman went 3 for 3 with a double and two home runs to go with six RBIs in leading the Bucs' 11 hit attack. He hit a solo homer in the third and a three-run blast in the fourth.

"This week I've just been working on staying through the middle with my swing and not trying to do too much," Fryman said. "I was a little fatigued after my start on Thursday, but I actually think that helped me stay relaxed and smooth at the plate and prevented me from pressing too much."

Britton had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, Sullivan plated a pair, and McDaniel went 3 for 3.

Blinn will have a chance to extend its perfect start to region play when it opens a four-game series with San Jacinto College-North at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, at Leroy Dreyer Field.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
