No. 9 Blinn topples Tyler in Region 14 Tournament semifinal, title tilt with No. 6 Trinity Valley up next

The Buccaneers are in the tournament championship for a second consecutive season and are vying for a sixth consecutive trip to nationals

A showdown between Region 14's top two teams is set.

The No. 9 Blinn College volleyball team outlasted Tyler Junior College in four sets in the Region 14 Tournament semifinal round Saturday at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers' 28-26, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19 victory over the Apaches set up a championship tilt with No. 6 Trinity Valley Community College scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Kruse Center.

Trinity Valley, the top seed in the tournament, knocked off Navarro College in four sets in Saturday's other semifinal match.

Both Trinity Valley and Blinn played their first matches of the tournament on Saturday after having first- and second-round byes.

"We're glad to get this win and get to the championship," Bucs head coach Gregg Whitis said. "I'm hopeful playing today meant we shook some of our errors out, because we know we'll need to play cleaner volleyball against Trinity Valley. Our kids are going to be excited to play and we're going to have to play our best."

Blinn (37-2), seeded second in the tournament, is in the title match for a second consecutive season and is vying for its sixth consecutive berth in the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship. The winner of Sunday's title game earns an automatic bid for the national tournament in Clarksville, Tenn.

The Bucs reached Sunday's championship by way of its third win over Tyler this season.

The Apaches did their best to make life difficult for Blinn, but the Bucs did enough in the third and fourth sets to prevail.

Blinn built a 24-15 lead in the third set before Tyler went on a 7-0 run.

A kill from sophomore hitter Shiloh Jones snuffed out the Apaches' comeback and gave the Bucs a 2-1 set lead.

The Apaches opened a 16-12 advantage in the fourth set before Blinn staged a 13-3 rally to close out the match.

After Tyler sent the Bucs on their way with a serve into the net, sophomore hitter Olivia Stringer continued Blinn's momentum with a kill off the Apache block.

Moments later, Stringer tallied two straight kills to tie the match at 17.

The two teams would play to a tie twice more before the Apaches gave the Bucs the lead for good with another service error.

From there, Jones stepped up for a sequence Whitis described as, "Shiloh just said, 'We're not going to lose.'"

Jones provided back-to-back blocks followed by a kill to give her team a 23-19 advantage.

"We didn't want to go to a fifth set," Jones explained. "We needed to get the job done and we knew we could do it, it was just a confidence thing. Being able to step up for my team with the match on the line was important to me so it feels good to be able to come through."

After Jones put the Bucs on the brink, sophomore hitter Kaliko Schilling followed with a kill just inside the right corner boundary line and another past Tyler's double block to end it.

Stringer – who is second nationally with 489 kills – also played a crucial role for Blinn, leading her team on offense with 24 kills and defense with 17 digs.

"We fought really hard today and came out with a lot of energy, and I think that carried us through the tough parts of this match," Stringer said. "We had too many errors at times, but I think our ability to persevere comes from how much we want this. Everyone came together at the end to pull through because that's the type of team we are."

Schilling finished with 12 kills and Jones had seven.

Sophomore setters Leah Hoss and Camden Bizot distributed 25 and 24 set assists, respectively.

At the service line, Stringer, Schilling, and Bizot had two aces apiece.

Complementing Stringer's strong floor defense was a well-rounded effort from the Bucs. Hoss had eight digs; Bizot, freshman hitter/defensive specialist Gracie Moore, and freshman defensive specialist/libero Natalie Silva had seven each; and sophomore middle blocker Jana Cetkovic and freshman defensive specialist/libero Zoey Montgomery tallied six apiece.

At the net, Jones and Cetkovic both finished with three block assists, and Stringer, Jones, and sophomore middle blocker Karolina Karabasz each added one solo block.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
