Big third round helps No. 13 Blinn earn second place at Blinn Fall Invitational

The 13th-ranked Blinn College men's team used a fantastic final round to earn a runner-up finish Tuesday at the Blinn Fall Invitational in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers shot 11-under par across the final 18 holes of the two-day, three-tournament for an impressive 7-under team performance at the Brenham Country Club.

Blinn finished second behind seventh-ranked McLennan Community College, which finished 14-under. Nine teams and 50 golfers competed in the tournament.

Tuesday proved to be an impressive turnaround for the Bucs after they shot 4-over and even in the first and second rounds Monday.

Blinn tallied 29 birdies Tuesday.

"We had a great day today, and really the only difference between today and yesterday was that we made a lot of putts today," Bucs head coach David Johnson said. "Our players were frustrated yesterday, but they came right back out here today and went to work. You had us and McLennan – two good teams – going at it, and I was really happy with how our group responded after entering the day behind as many strokes as we were."

The Bucs trailed McLennan by 18 strokes entering Tuesday, but thoroughly outperformed the Highlanders, who finished even in round three.

Blinn was led by a strong outing from sophomore Adrian Rodriguez. The race for the individual crown came down to the final two holes, and it ultimately took a bogey from Rodriguez to allow McLennan's Abe Bignell to eke out a two-shot win. Rodriguez shot 4-under Tuesday and finished 5-under for the tournament.

"We had a tough first round, fought back in the second, and then today I thought we had an absolutely great performance," Rodriguez said. "We were more aggressive, aimed at more pins, and played a little more loose and free today, and I think that was the difference."

Behind Rodriguez, sophomore Jaxson Daniele finished 1-under and took fourth following a five-player tiebreaker. Sophomore Ben Potter was also one of the five players to tie for third and finished sixth. Sophomore Cody Peters and freshman Broc Talamantez cracked the top 10 at ninth and 10th place with 2-over and 3-over performances, respectively.

Blinn's fall season concludes at the two-day Wildcat Invitational hosted by Louisiana Christian University beginning Monday, Oct. 27, in Pineville, La.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
