Clutch pitching, Holland's bat lead No. 19 Blinn to doubleheader sweep of Port Arthur

A pair of dominant pitching performances and a big day at the plate from Londyn Holland powered the No. 19 Blinn College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Lamar State College-Port Arthur on Wednesday in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers defeated their Region 14 South foe 8-1 in the opener and 10-7 in the finale.

"We needed these two wins," Blinn head coach Rick Church said. "We want to keep our postseason destiny in our own hands and not have to depend on anybody else for seeding. Today was a good step in the right direction."

The Bucs improved to 22-12 overall and 6-4 in the South, where they sit in second place.

Game one was close through 2 1/2 innings before Blinn took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. The Buccaneers added four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to pull away.

Offensively, the story of the game was Holland, who shined in the No. 9 spot in the lineup. The infielder belted her second and third home runs of the season — a go-ahead solo shot in the third inning and a two-run blast in the fourth — and finished with three RBIs.

"I had been struggling at the plate, and I've been in my head a bit," Holland said. "I've started to find myself at the plate, and I'm relaxed and having fun again."

Sophomore infielder Annie Beckendorf also homered in the fourth inning, launching a two-run shot to make it 4-1 before Holland extended the lead to 6-1.

Blinn finished with 10 hits, including two apiece from Holland, Beckendorf, sophomore outfielder Halle Scheel, and freshman outfielder Lexis Moss. Beckendorf drove in three runs, Moss tripled and added an RBI, and freshman infielder Brianna Moreno singled and drove in a run.

In the circle, sophomore Brynn Gallamore (12-6) tossed her 12th complete game of the season. She allowed one unearned run on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Game two featured another clutch pitching performance, this time from Blinn's bullpen.

After the Seahawks took a 7-6 lead on a two-out home run in the top of the fourth, freshman left-hander Jamison Wlos entered and recorded the final out of the inning.

Following a game-tying run in the bottom half, Wlos retired Lamar State-Port Arthur in order in the fifth, worked around a single in the sixth, and closed the game with three consecutive outs in the seventh after issuing a leadoff walk.

Wlos improved to 1-2 after earning her first collegiate victory.

"I know what I'm capable of, and when you have your coaches and teammates behind you, it makes it a lot more fun to go out there and compete," Wlos said. "I love high-pressure moments, and I felt hyped but also comfortable and relaxed. I've been put in situations like that quite a bit recently, and I just needed to stay positive and believe in my pitches."

Sophomore pitcher Madisyn Bracknell started and received a no-decision.

The Seahawks struck first in the second inning before the Bucs answered in their half. Sophomore catcher Madysen Taylor tied the game with an RBI single, and Holland followed with a go-ahead RBI base hit.

Lamar State-Port Arthur regained the lead with two runs in the third.

Blinn responded in the bottom of the inning on a Beckendorf RBI groundout, a two-run single from Holland, and an RBI single from Scheel to make it 6-4.

After the Seahawks edged ahead 7-6 in the fourth, Beckendorf tied the game for the final time with a deep fly ball to center field. Moss tagged up from second and raced home to even the score.

The Buccaneers took the lead for good in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Scheel. Moreno later added an RBI bunt single, and Wiese followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring.

Blinn totaled 16 hits in the finale, led by three-hit performances from Holland and Moreno. Moss, Wiese, and freshman outfielder Skylar Flanagan added two hits apiece. Holland drove in three runs, while Beckendorf and Scheel had two RBIs each.

Next up, Blinn faces South leader Alvin Community College (8-2) in a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday in Alvin, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
