No. 22 Blinn drops competitive doubleheader to San Jacinto-South

Buccaneers fall in two close games, drop to fourth place in Region 14 South standings

The 22nd-ranked Blinn College softball team dropped a pair of close games to San Jacinto College-South in a Region 14 South doubleheader Monday at Hohlt Park in Brenham, Texas.

The Ravens rallied for a 9-7 victory in the opener before securing a 14-12 come-from-behind win to complete the sweep.

Blinn fell to 28-16 overall and 12-8 in the South and now holds the fourth and final spot in the Region 14 Tournament standings. San Jacinto-South (13-3) strengthened its lead atop the division.

The Buccaneers have four regular-season games remaining, all against South opponents.

"We missed an opportunity to turn things around in our division today," Blinn head coach Rick Church said. "All we can do is compete better down the stretch."

In the opener, the Bucs rallied from a 3-0 deficit and eventually took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Ravens surged ahead for good with a five-run seventh. Blinn added a run in the home half of the inning but could not complete the comeback.

The Buccaneers finished with 14 hits, including three apiece from sophomore first baseman Daniela Lopez and freshman infielder Londyn Holland, who also doubled.

Freshman outfielder Lexis Moss had two hits and two RBIs, while sophomore designated hitter Kacie Dudensing and freshman infielder Brianna Moreno added two hits each.

Sophomore pitcher Madisyn Bracknell (8-6) took the loss in relief after entering in the seventh inning. Sophomore Brynn Gallamore started and went the distance, earning a no-decision.

Blinn started fast in the finale, building a 3-0 lead in the first inning before San Jacinto-South responded.

After the Ravens moved ahead 5-3, the Bucs answered with four runs in the bottom half to reclaim the lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, as San Jacinto-South tied the game in the fourth and broke it open with five runs in the fifth.

Blinn responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 12-11, but the Ravens added two more in the sixth to maintain control. The Bucs scored once in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Blinn again produced at the plate with 13 hits. Holland led the way with three hits, while sophomore catcher/third baseman Cadence Wiese doubled twice as part of a two-hit effort. Moss and sophomore outfielder Halle Scheel also had two hits apiece.

Wiese and sophomore infielder Annie Beckendorf each drove in three runs, while Moss and freshman outfielder Skylar Flanagan added two RBIs apiece.

After freshman starter Jamison Wlos worked four innings, Bracknell entered in the fifth and pitched 2/3 of an inning while taking the loss.

Blinn returns to action with a Region 14 South doubleheader against Lamar State College-Port Arthur at 1 p.m. Saturday in Port Arthur, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
