Galveston sweeps Region 14 South doubleheader from No. 18 Blinn

The Buccaneers continue their season with a South twin bill against San Jacinto-South on April 27

The No. 18 Blinn College softball team suffered a Region 14 South doubleheader sweep at the hands of Galveston College on Saturday in Galveston, Texas.

The Whitecaps secured a 10-4 victory in the opener before edging the Buccaneers 4-3 in the finale.

"Galveston was the more opportunistic team today," Blinn head coach Rick Church said. "All we can do is regroup for Monday."

Blinn fell to 28-14 overall and 12-6 in South play and is now tied with Alvin College for third place in the division.

In game one, freshman outfielder Lexis Moss put the Buccaneers on the board in the top of the first inning with a two-run single.

Galveston answered with four runs in the bottom half of the frame and pulled away with a three-run second inning.

The Whitecaps added two runs in the fourth before Blinn chipped away in the fifth, when freshman infielder Brianna Moreno delivered an RBI single.

Galveston tacked on another run in the sixth, and freshman infielder Londyn Holland capped the scoring with her fifth home run of the season in the seventh.

Blinn totaled seven hits in the opener, highlighted by a three-hit performance from freshman outfielder Skylar Flanagan.

Sophomore pitcher Brynn Gallamore (15-7) took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits with three walks in 1 1/3 innings.

The finale was a tightly contested battle, but Galveston used a three-run fifth inning to secure the sweep.

Moss opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI fielder's choice before the Whitecaps answered in the bottom half.

In the second, freshman catcher Kourtney Carter gave Blinn a 2-1 lead with an RBI groundout.

Sophomore infielder Annie Beckendorf extended the advantage to 3-1 with a solo home run in the fourth, her team-leading 11th of the season.

Galveston responded with a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth to claim the lead for good.

Blinn collected nine hits in the finale, with Flanagan, Moss, and Beckendorf recording two hits apiece.

Sophomore pitcher Madisyn Bracknell (8-4) was charged with the loss despite not allowing an earned run. She surrendered four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks while tossing her ninth complete game of the season.

The Buccaneers will look to rebound when they host South leader San Jacinto College-South for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Monday at Hohlt Park in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
