No. 7 Blinn on doorstep of South crown following doubleheader sweep of Galveston

The Buccaneers are one victory away from a fourth consecutive division championship

A dominant victory in game one and a dramatic rally in game two propelled No. 7 Blinn College baseball to a crucial doubleheader sweep of Galveston College on Saturday in Galveston, Texas.

The Buccaneers won the opener 10-1 before storming back in the ninth inning to secure a come-from-behind victory in the finale.

Blinn completed a three-game Region 14 South series sweep of the Whitecaps and now sits one win away from clinching the South title for a fourth consecutive season. The Bucs improved to 36-12 overall and 24-7 in the South.

"Several guys stepped up big for us in some big spots all day," Blinn head coach Dusty Hart said. "We just grinded all day."

Game one was all Blinn, as the Buccaneers plated three runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back.

Sophomore utility player Benji Barrera opened the scoring with an RBI double, before sophomore utility player Kason Atkins added an RBI groundout. Redshirt freshman catcher Drew Garcia followed with a run-scoring single to make it 3-0.

After Galveston got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, Blinn responded in the fourth.

Sophomore infielder Drew Britton drove in a run on a groundout, Barrera added a two-run single, freshman third baseman Ryley Leininger drew a bases-loaded walk, and Barrera later scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 8-1.

Freshman utility player Dane Perry added an RBI double and Atkins chipped in a run-scoring single in the sixth to cap the scoring.

The Bucs totaled seven hits and eight walks. Barrera led the way with two hits and three RBIs, while Atkins drove in two runs.

Sophomore starting pitcher Dylan Thompson (6-0) remained unbeaten with five strong innings. He allowed one earned run on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

"He's just a steady Eddie," Hart said of Thompson. "That guy has a really good feel for what he's doing on the mound. Every time he goes out there, we're confident that he's going to give us a chance to win."

Redshirt freshman Landon Bowden followed with two scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out four.

Blinn jumped out to another quick start in game two but needed a late rally to complete the sweep.

An RBI double from freshman catcher Zachary Tuxhorn, a run-scoring single from freshman designated hitter Austin Glasscock, and an RBI double from Barrera gave the Bucs a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Galveston answered with two runs in each of the second, third, and fifth innings to take the lead.

"Our guys didn't get frustrated, and they didn't panic," Hart said. "When things aren't going your way at the plate, that can be easier said than done. I was really proud of the guys for sticking to the plan and battling."

Blinn began its comeback in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore outfielder Reece Lunsford delivered a pinch-hit two-run single to cut the deficit to one. Atkins followed with a game-tying RBI single.

"Those were two really big hits at a turning point in the game," Hart added. "I couldn't be prouder of Lunsford and Atkins."

The Bucs took control in the ninth. After an error allowed Glasscock to reach base, Leininger roped an RBI double to center field to give Blinn the lead, though he was thrown out attempting to stretch it into a triple. Lunsford then added an insurance run with his fourth home run of the season.

Blinn finished with eight hits and six walks. Lunsford and Glasscock each recorded two hits, while Leininger drove in a team-high two runs.

Freshman pitcher Trevor Moore (4-1) earned the win with four dominant innings of relief, allowing no hits while walking one and striking out five. He closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

"What a great performance by Trevor Moore," Hart said. "He was absolutely lights out for us."

Redshirt freshman Travis Minard received a no-decision after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts across five innings.

Up next, the Bucs will look to capture the South crown when they face second-place Wharton County Junior College in a four-game series to close the regular season.

The series begins at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 27, in Wharton, Texas.

Blinn currently leads the Pioneers by four games in the South standings. One victory would secure the division title and home-field advantage for the Region 14 South Regional Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
