No. 4 Blinn blows past Galveston for doubleheader sweep, South series win

The Buccaneers improved to 21-8 overall and are tied for first place in the South with an 11-3 record

The fourth-ranked Blinn College baseball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Galveston College on Saturday at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham, Texas, securing a Region 14 South series victory.

The Buccaneers won the opener 12-4 before completing the sweep with a 12-3 run-rule victory in seven innings. Blinn took three of four games from the Whitecaps to improve to 21-8 overall and 11-3 in South play while remaining tied atop the division standings with Wharton County Junior College.

"Any time you sweep a doubleheader and win a series on top of it, it's a good week," Blinn head coach Dusty Hart said. "We lost game two of the series on Thursday, and after we licked our wounds a bit, I'm really impressed with how we responded. Coming back after a tough loss and being mentally tough enough to take care of business was reassuring."

Blinn rallied from early deficits in both contests to earn the sweep.

In game one, Galveston built a 3-0 lead before the Buccaneers erupted for 10 runs across the next four innings to seize control. An error put Blinn on the board in the first, and sophomore infielder Jacob Bohacek followed with a go-ahead three-run home run in the second — his team-leading 10th of the season.

The Buccaneers broke the game open in the third when sophomore utility player Kason Atkins doubled in a run and freshman catcher/designated hitter Dane Perry launched a three-run homer to center field. Blinn added two runs in the fourth and single tallies in the fifth and sixth to pull away.

"I knew we were going to have to swing the bats well today in order to come out on the right side," Hart said. "The emphasis was on competing and avoiding strikeouts. We did a fantastic job of that."

Blinn struck out just four times in the opener and five times in game two.

Bohacek, sophomore first baseman Drew Britton, and sophomore infielder Hunter Smolinski recorded two hits apiece, while Bohacek and Perry drove in four runs each. Britton, Atkins, and freshman outfielder Carson Cherry also produced RBIs.

On the mound, sophomore Luke Ekdall (4-3) earned his fourth consecutive victory, allowing four earned runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over five innings.

"I don't think Ekdall had his best stuff, but it was a really gritty effort," Hart said. "He battled and showed the kind of makeup he has."

Redshirt freshman Landon Bowden followed with two scoreless innings of relief, permitting one hit and one walk while striking out four.

Game two followed a similar script as the Whitecaps again jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning.

Sophomore outfielder Tyler Sullivan cut the deficit to one with a towering two-run homer in the second — his second of the season — and the score remained tight until Blinn surged ahead in the sixth. Smolinski singled home a run, Bohacek added a sacrifice fly, freshman catcher/designated hitter Zachary Tuxhorn delivered an RBI single, and Cherry drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-3.

The Buccaneers put the game away with a six-run seventh. Atkins scored on a passed ball, Tuxhorn worked a bases-loaded walk, Barrera added an RBI groundout, and Cherry capped the sweep with a three-run homer to left field.

Blinn totaled 13 hits in the finale, led by Smolinski's three-hit performance. Barrera, Atkins, and Sullivan had two hits each. Cherry finished with three RBIs, while Sullivan and Tuxhorn drove in two apiece.

After surrendering three first-inning runs, sophomore starter Hayden Morris (5-2) settled in to toss five consecutive scoreless frames and earn the win. He allowed four hits and three walks while striking out five over six innings.

"Any time we give up runs, it's imperative that our pitchers start putting up zeroes," Hart said. "Hayden did that. He's going to give you a fight every time he takes the mound."

Freshman Trevor Moore closed the game with a perfect seventh inning. He struck out one.

Blinn steps away from South play Monday when it visits Region 14 North competitor Navarro College at 2 p.m. in Corsicana, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
