No. 4 Blinn places ninth among loaded Riverbend Intercollegiate field

Freshman Ava Murcer led the Buccaneers with a 16th-place finish

The fourth-ranked Blinn College women's golf team wrapped up play at the Riverbend Intercollegiate on Tuesday with a ninth-place finish in a challenging 16-team field.

Hosted by Houston Christian University, the three-round, two-day tournament in Sugar Land, Texas, featured 13 NCAA Division I programs along with three NJCAA teams. The University of Louisville claimed the team championship.

Blinn posted a 49-over-par score for the event and finished ahead of several NCAA Division I opponents, including East Texas A&M University, Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, Lamar University, Prairie View A&M University, and University of the Incarnate Word.

The Buccaneers also placed five strokes ahead of top-ranked NJCAA program Odessa College and 28 strokes ahead of No. 11 McLennan Community College.

"I'm proud of the team's energy and effort," Blinn assistant coach Gary Belt said. "This is the toughest field we have faced all year. We didn't have our 'A games' this week, but we managed the course fairly well."

Blinn placed two golfers inside the top 30 of the 88-player field.

Freshman Ava Murcer led the Buccaneers with a 6-over-par performance on the par-72 course to tie for 16th place. She was boosted by a strong third round in which she recorded four birdies and 12 pars.

Sophomore Daniah Syed followed Murcer with a 10-over finish, tying for 28th place.

Freshman Jacqueline Lawrence finished 15-over to place 43rd, while sophomore Abiha Syed shot 17-over to finish 55th.

"One of our goals was to be the lowest scoring junior college team; we accomplished that, and it was awesome to beat a great opponent like Odessa," Belt added. "Playing in NCAA Division I tournaments is invaluable to the team. I can tell the players are gaining confidence and belief that they are a good team and that they can compete with NCAA teams and top NJCAA programs."

Blinn returns to action at the two-day Cardinal Challenge hosted by Lamar beginning Monday, March 30, in Beaumont, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
