Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Blinn pulls away from Hill for double-digit victory

Alissa Bryant scores game-high 21 points as Buccaneers improve to 2-0

The Blinn College women's basketball team continued its strong start to the season Thursday night, pulling away from Hill College for a 59-46 victory at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers improved to 2-0 behind a game-high 21 points from sophomore guard Alissa Bryant and another strong defensive effort. The victory marked Blinn's eighth win in its last nine meetings with Hill.

After limiting No. 13 McLennan Community College to 52 points in its season opener Tuesday, the Bucs continued to make defense a strength two days later. Although Blinn struggled to find its offensive rhythm through the first three quarters, defense persevered before a 20-point fourth period helped the Bucs pull away and secure the victory."

"I thought there wasn't a lot of offensive flow for the first two or three quarters," head coach Jeff Jenkins said. "We missed a lot of layups, we were 10 of 19 from the free-throw line, and we had a lot of open 3-pointers we didn't knock down. It's nice that you can win against a good team and not really play as good as you could have."

Bryant led all scorers, knocking down several key 3s as the Bucs found some offensive rhythm late. Blinn finished 7 of 25 from beyond the arc and 13 of 33 inside the arc.

Freshman guard CeMaria Kelly and sophomore forward Kamaria Ford added eight and six points, respectively. Freshman guard Sari Taylor chipped in five, while sophomore guard Chloe Williams, sophomore forward Amyah Weathersby and freshman guard Jakayla Glover each scored four. Sophomore forward Naya Burleson had three points, while freshman guard Ashanti Smith and sophomore forward Phoenix Sheed each contributed two.

Blinn led 15-12 after the first quarter and carried a 27-20 advantage into halftime. The Rebels stayed within striking distance through the third quarter, but the Bucs maintained their defensive intensity and entered the final period with a 39-30 lead.

Blinn began to find more offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter, building its first double-digit lead when Ford scored on a contested layup with 9:09 remaining. Taylor added a 3, and the Bucs continued to capitalize on opportunities around the basket and from the perimeter.

Bryant knocked down two more triples late in the game, including one with 2:05 remaining to give Blinn a 56-40 advantage. She added another in the closing seconds to help seal the victory.

Kelly said the Bucs' offensive adjustments helped create better scoring opportunities down the stretch.

"I think the paint touches allowed us to get buckets because they helped get our teammates open," Kelly said. "We were scoring, getting our own buckets, and helping each other out."

Jenkins also credited Glover's ability to attack the basket for helping Blinn generate offense when its perimeter shots were not falling.

"Jakayla is our best paint toucher. She can get a paint touch any time," Jenkins said. "She got us layups because she is really good at paint touches."

The Bucs' defensive effort continued to be a point of emphasis for Jenkins, who said he has been encouraged by the progress of a young roster featuring numerous freshmen and new players.

"For this time of year with this many freshmen and new players, the defense is pretty good," Jenkins said. "For this many young kids, they care about defense, and they're not bad."

Bryant said the team's defensive work in practice has helped establish that identity early in the season.

"We work a lot on defense," Bryant said. "He gets on us sometimes in practice, so we work on defense a lot and try to perfect it as much as we can."

Blinn used 14 players Thursday, giving the Bucs opportunities to lean on their depth when foul trouble affected several players.

"That's why you have a good bench," Jenkins explained. "They help you down the stretch when players start racking up fouls."

Bryant said the team's early success has helped build confidence, but the Bucs understand there is still plenty of work ahead.

"I know we're young, but we don't really let that be a disadvantage for us," Bryant said. "We know some teams are older, but we learn how to use our game, help our other teammates get better, and play our best defense."

Blinn continues its season on the road against Temple College at 2 p.m. Saturday in Temple, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
