Blinn rallies past Tyler, moves into second place in Region 14

The Buccaneers got a career-high 23 points from Taylor Spencer

The Blinn College women's basketball team saw an opportunity to climb the Region 14 standings and seized it.

The Buccaneers battled Tyler Junior College for 40 minutes and overcame a fourth-quarter deficit with a late run to earn a 74-68 win Saturday at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

Beginning the day in third place in the region ranks, Blinn (14-7, 4-1 Region 14) used the victory to leapfrog the Apaches (4-2) and land in second. The Bucs now trail first-place and 15th-ranked Trinity Valley Community College (5-0) by half a game.

The victory was Blinn's first against the Apaches since March 13, 2024.

"This was by far our best win of the year," Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. "Taylor Spencer had a huge game, Amaya Weathersby played incredibly well both offensively and defensively, and Mariah Houston's five 3-pointers were key."

Tyler was also averaging 87 points per game at the start of the day, but found offense harder to come by against a stingy Blinn defense.

The Bucs and Apaches traded leads from start to finish, with Blinn grabbing a 17-16 edge after one quarter of play before Tyler rallied for a 36-29 halftime advantage. The Bucs bounced back to lead 54-53 heading into the fourth period.

"I knew this week would make us better, win or lose," Jenkins added. "I didn't know if we were ready to play as well as we did today, but boy did we show up."

The Bucs showed up in a big way during the final 10 minutes of action, as they erased a 60-56 with an 18-8, game-sealing run.

Houston — a sophomore guard — drilled a 3 with 5:56 remaining to ignite the rally, and a Weathersby layup gave Blinn a brief 61-60 lead. After Tyler used a single free throw to tie things up for the final time, Houston took a long pass from sophomore guard Jasey Campbell and drilled another trey to give her team the lead for good.

Moments later, Houston returned the favor when she bypassed a look at the wing in favor of a quick pass to Campbell in the corner. Campbell knocked down the 3 and the Bucs were suddenly ahead six with 4:17 remaining.

"I told Mariah that was a great assist … she made the right decision," Jenkins said. "She passed up a good shot to create a great one."

Tyler never came closer than five points the rest of the way.

Spencer finished with 23 points, a career-high for the sophomore guard and her first outing with 20 or more.

Houston added 19 points with five 3s, and Weathersby added 14.

The Bucs get back to work with a region home tilt against Trinity Valley at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
