No. 11 Blinn sweeps College of DuPage in Blinn Invitational opener

The Buccaneers utilized their entire bench on their way to a seventh consecutive victory

No. 11 Blinn College volleyball began its final tournament of the regular season with a bang.

The Buccaneers opened the three-day Blinn Invitational with a 25-10, 25-18, 25-16 sweep of College of DuPage on Thursday at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

The victory was the seventh in a row for the Bucs, who improved to 23-1 overall.

With the exception of the middle portion of the second set, Blinn maintained control of the action for most of the night, allowing head coach Gregg Whitis to empty his bench.

"It was good to play everybody, and we appreciate DuPage for coming down and giving us a match," Whitis said. "It's hard to stay sharp every single time you play, but we had some good performances."

The Bucs got off to a fast start in the opening set and built a quick 7-1 lead. DuPage sent the final serve of the set into the net to give Blinn a one-set lead.

"I thought we came out and played well in the first set and played pretty clean," Whitis said. "Then in the second and third sets we were able to get some of our other plays in, which is always good to see. We set the middles more tonight and got five different kids in there."

In the second set, the Chaparrals found some footing and built a 9-6 lead against Blinn, but freshman hitter Annika Brooks kickstarted a 5-1 Bucs run, punctuated by a service ace from sophomore hitter Olivia Stringer.

After DuPage answered to regain the lead at 16-15, Stringer recorded a kill off a Chaparrals block to tie the set, and sophomore middle blocker Jana Cetkovic gave her team the lead for good with a kill on a free ball.

The Bucs scored the final three points of the second set, capped by an ace from Stringer.

In the decisive set, DuPage led 3-2 before the Chaparrals sent a serve out of bounds and Bucs sophomore hitter Shiloh Jones followed with a kill for a permanent lead.

DuPage was within 14-10 midway through the set before Blinn went on a 4-1 burst to build space.

Kills from Stringer and freshman middle blocker Kaylie McKinney put the match on ice.

On the night, Stringer had a team-high 12 kills to push her NJCAA Division I-leading total to 295. She also led Blinn's floor defense with seven digs.

Freshman hitter Sonia Bojarska followed with eight kills and added five digs and three block assists.

"It's always good to see Sonia play six rotations, and I thought she passed the ball pretty well and did well in reception, too," Whitis said. "She got the start, and I thought she handled the opportunity the way she should have."

Jones and Brooks had five kills apiece.

Sophomore setter Leah Hoss dished out a team-best 21 assists.

Cetkovic was stellar at the net with two solo blocks and five assists.

"Jana is our most consistent player, and she practices how she plays," Whitis explained. "There's no difference in intensity or how she functions in practice and matches. It doesn't matter if it's tonight or a match against the best team we've faced all year; she brings it every time."

Sophomore middle blocker Karolina Karabasz tallied four block assists, freshman defensive specialist/libero Natalia Silva had three, and String finished with three assists to go with one solo.

Blinn resumes play in the Invitational when it takes on Pratt Community College at 11 a.m. and Dallas College Richland at 3 p.m. on Friday at the Kruse Center.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
