No. 4 Blinn wins rain-delayed finale against Alvin to capture Region XIV South crown

The Buccaneers will now host the Region XIV South Regional Tournament for a third consecutive season

A rain delay couldn't delay history.

The fourth-ranked Blinn College baseball team outlasted harsh weather and a pesky Alvin Community College squad in a must-win regular-season finale Saturday at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers split a two-day, weather-suspended doubleheader with the Dolphins, falling 11-3 in game one before prevailing 10-0 in six innings in game two to capture its third consecutive Region XIV South crown.

Needing just one victory to claim first place in the South, Blinn (40-12, 28-7 South) dropped Friday's opener but came out strong in game two to grab a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning before an hours long rainstorm put the contest on hold. Play resumed Saturday, and the Bucs finished off the Dolphins in just over 40 minutes to earn the run-rule victory.

The Bucs now have three consecutive 40-win seasons.

Blinn fended off runner-up San Jacinto College-North for the South title after the Ravens swept Coastal Bend College on Friday. San Jacinto was within a half game of the Bucs entering Saturday and owned the head-to-head tiebreaker with Blinn. The Ravens would have won the South had Alvin secured a sweep.

Instead, the Bucs will host the Region XIV South Regional Tournament for the third time in as many seasons.

"Winning three conference titles in a row isn't easy to do, especially in Texas where there is a lot of great college baseball being played," said third-year Blinn head coach Dusty Hart. "Just about every year in Region XIV, it seems like the North and South divisions are decided by a game or two; that has certainly been the case for us. It takes a special group of young men to do what we've done this season and in seasons past. You don't just accidentally win the Region XIV South; it's a long process that begins back in August. This is the result of guys showing up to practice to work hard and ready to play on game days every time we take the field."

The two-part finale was all Blinn, beginning with an RBI double from Caden Ferraro during Friday's first frame. Freshman Trey Craig added an RBI single in the inning to make it 2-0. In the third, Craig smacked another RBI single before, freshman Reece Lunsford tripled to drive him in, and freshman Kason Atkins hit a two-run home run to left field for a 6-0 cushion.

The bottom of the fourth saw sophomore Matt Quintanar double and Allen followed with a single before rain paused play.

When the game continued Saturday, Craig stepped to the plate with one out and runners at the corners and promptly grounded a single to left field for a 7-0 advantage.

In the home half of the sixth, sophomore Bennett Fryman hit a leadoff double and Quintanar drew a one-out walk before Allen reached on an error to score another run. Allen stole second, and with two runners in scoring position, Lunsford doubled on a grounder to left to plate two and enforce the mercy rule.

"We knew what we needed to do today, especially after the way the first game of the doubleheader went," Lunsford said. "We stuck together, stuck to the gameplan by passing the bat to the next guy in the lineup, and just played our brand of baseball."

Blinn piled up 12 hits, led by a three-hit, three-RBI performance for Craig. Lunsford had two hits and two RBIs, Allen finished with two hits and drove in one, and Atkins had the homer and two RBIs.

Freshman Hayden Morris started the ballgame on the mound for the Bucs and hurled a one-hitter across four innings. He struck out three and didn't issue a walk while earning the victory. He improved to 8-0 on the year.

Cadyn Shaw 2025

"You can't prepare for weather, but I was prepared to go out yesterday and give my team the best chance to win," Morris said. "I wanted to limit my walks, throw strikes, and let my defense play behind me and that's what I did."

Freshman Cadyn Shaw took the mound Saturday and tossed the final two innings. He allowed two hits, didn't walk a batter, and punched out one.

Next up for the Bucs is the four-team Region XIV South Regional Tournament. Play begins Thursday, May 8, and can conclude as early as Saturday, May 10. If necessary, a winner-take-all championship game would be played Sunday, May 11.

The North division will send runner-up Northeast Texas Community College and fourth-place Paris Junior College to Brenham, while Wharton County Junior College will round out the field as the South's third-place squad.

The winner of the South Regional will face the champion from the North in the Region XIV Super Regional best-of-three series, with the winner advancing to the NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. Blinn reached the World Series in each of the past two seasons, winning it all last year for the first time in program history.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
