Early deficit proves too much for No. 4 Blinn in region loss at San Jacinto-North

The Buccaneers conclude their four-game series with the Ravens on Saturday in Brenham, Texas

The fourth-ranked Blinn College baseball team staged a ninth-inning rally, but couldn't get completely over the hump in a 9-5 Region XIV South road loss to San Jacinto College-North on Thursday in Houston.

The Buccaneers dropped to 14-6 overall and 3-2 in the South after losing back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The Ravens have claimed the first two contests of the four-game series.

"We just got beat tonight, plain and simple," Blinn head coach Dusty Hart said. "San Jacinto made the big plays, got the big hits, and made the big pitches, and we didn't. Baseball is a team game, and you have to play it together. That's what makes baseball the beautiful game that it is. Talent gets thrown out the window between the white lines, and the better team will always win, not necessarily the most talented."

The Bucs were in the game early after trimming the Ravens' three-run lead down to 3-2 in the third inning. San Jacinto took control from there, however, as the hosts tallied a run in the home half of the third and four more in the fourth for an 8-2 advantage.

The two teams each scored one run in the sixth before Blinn attempted to claw all the way back in the ninth.

With the bases loaded, a fielder's choice ground out from sophomore Bennett Fryman and an RBI groundout from freshman Drew Britton knocked in a pair of runs. The Bucs were unable to keep their rally going with runners on second and third base as a strikeout put the game on ice.

Blinn collected seven hits, including two apiece for sophomores Lane Allen and Matt Quintanar. Sophomore Ryder McDaniel tripled. Fryman, Britton, McDaniel, and sophomore Caden Ferraro drove in one run apiece.

The Ravens amassed 10 hits.

Fryman was also the pitcher of record for Blinn following 3 innings on the mound. He allowed five runs (two earned) on three hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

Blinn will attempt to even the set when the two teams meet for a series-concluding twin bill at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 national championships since 1987.
