Blinn earns Call of Duty win, drops League of Legends postseason match

The Buccaneers face Northeast Alabama in a Call of Duty tilt Tuesday

The Blinn College esports team went 1-1 in two matches Monday.

The Buccaneers' Call of Duty team defeated Dawson Community College in an NJCAA Esports (NJCAAe) tilt, while their League of Legends squad came up short against College of DuPage in a Collegiate League of Legends NJCAAe Conference Playoffs bout.

Blinn's Jordan Vo, Isaias Nieto, Aariz Ali, and Travis Stansberry picked up a 3-0 Call of Duty victory over Dawson in a best-of-five series.

The matchup pitted the four Bucs against Dawson, with each team attempting to collect three wins across three modes of play in the first-person-shooter game:
  • Hardpoint: Teams secure rotating capture points, earning points for control. A team wins by reaching 250 points first.
  • Search and Destroy: Teams alternate attacking and defending, with the goal to plant or defuse an objective. The first team to win 6 rounds claims victory.
  • Control: Teams attack and defend two capture points, with limited lives adding an elimination aspect. The first team to win three rounds claims victory.
Blinn improved to 2-2 in NJCAAe play.

"My players put in a lot of work with video reviewing and determining how we want to play the game going forward," Bucs assistant coach and Call of Duty manager Ryan Lucich said. "I was happy to see a lot of things we discussed come to fruition while taking a commanding series win. We'll look to continue climbing up the ladder of our NJCAAe group with hopes of locking in a playoff spot."

The Bucs battle Northeast Alabama Community College in an NJCAAe match at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Blinn's night concluded with a 3-0 (best-of-five) setback at the hands of top-seeded DuPage in the first round of the NJCAAe Conference Playoffs.

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) where teams of five players select champions with unique abilities to work together to gain control over a map. The game's objective is to destroy the enemy Nexus while securing objectives like turrets, inhibitors, and neutral monsters. Teams must control a map and destroy a Nexus while contesting neutral objectives such as Dragons and Baron Nashor for powerful boosts.

With the loss, the Bucs' League of Legends season came to an end.

Competing for the Bucs were Chandler Collins, Alec Chojecki, Braxton Jones, Brian Shi, and Richard Le.

"We tried a lot of new things in this series, and we had a few moments that paid off with some creative champion picks and plays, but DuPage was able to outlast us in all three rounds," said Lucich, who also manages Blinn League of Legends. "We weren't able to keep up with DuPage's tempo around the map, and they did a better job of coordinating fights better than us. Although this brings our season to an end, I'm proud of my team for continuing to try new things and putting their best foot forward until the end."

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 national championships since 1987.
