Blinn esports sweeps Trinity Valley, advances to NJCAAe West Regional finals

The Buccaneers will face Columbia Basin in the regional final on April 22

The Blinn College esports Overwatch team continued its postseason surge with a 3-0 sweep of Trinity Valley Community College in the NJCAA Esports (NJCAAe) West Regional Tournament semifinal round Wednesday.

The Buccaneers relied on the combined efforts of Joseph Mares, Donnivan Straight, Salvador Castaneda, Trey Vaughan, Jose Rios, and Charles Tomlinson to secure the best-of-five victory and punch their ticket to the regional finals.

Overwatch is a team-based, first-person shooter in which players select heroes with unique abilities and work together to complete objectives across multiple map modes. Each team can strategically choose its maps based on team strengths and opponent weaknesses.

Each round Wednesday featured a different win condition based on the following modes:

Control: Teams fight to capture and hold a single point. The first team to reach 100% control wins two rounds in a best-of-three format, where the loser of each round selects the next map.

Escort: The attacking team moves a payload to its destination while defenders attempt to stop them. The payload advances when attackers are nearby, and the attackers must complete the route before time expires.

Hybrid: Teams capture a point and then escort a payload. Attackers must first secure the capture point before advancing the payload.

Push: Teams battle to control a robot and push it toward the opponent's side. The first team to push it farther than their opponent wins, with the loser selecting the next map.

Flashpoint: Teams fight to control capture zones that rotate to new locations after each point is secured. The first team to capture three zones wins.

Blinn set the tone early on Lijiang Tower (Control), earning a 2-0 win behind clean engagements and steady control throughout the opening round.

On King's Row (Hybrid), the Buccaneers opted to begin on defense and delivered a dominant effort, securing a full hold for a 1-0 victory. Blinn then wasted little time on offense, needing just one decisive teamfight to capture the point and close out the round.

The Bucs completed the sweep on Route 66 (Escort) with another commanding showing. Blinn earned a second consecutive full hold on defense before quickly finishing the objective on offense to seal the match.

"We controlled the pace from the start and won fights cleanly, and that really set the tone for us," Blinn head coach Kyle Murto said. "Our preparation showed in our coordination and discipline, and the guys executed at a high level throughout the series."

With the win, Blinn advances to the NJCAAe West Regional finals, where it will face Columbia Basin College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22.

"We want to keep this momentum going and push toward a return to the national championship," Murto added. "We're also excited for another opportunity to represent NJCAAe on a big stage."

In addition to its regional finals appearance, Blinn has secured a bid to the Collegiate Esports Commissioners Cup (CECC) Overwatch event. The Buccaneers will compete in Waco, Texas, from April 30-May 3 against top collegiate programs from across the country.
