Blinn Rocket League powers past Wichita State Tech, Waubonsee in NJCAA Esports action

The Buccaneers improved to 2-2 in the NJCAAe Central Conference

The Blinn College esports Rocket League team picked up two wins in NJCAA Esports (NJCAAe) play Friday.

The Buccaneers defeated Wichita State University Tech 3-0 and Waubonsee Community College 3-1 in a pair of best-of-five matchups.

Xavier Johnson, Braeden Pomeroy, Travis Stansberry, along with substitute player Edward Tejada, earned the victories for Blinn.

The Bucs are now 2-2 in the NJCAAe Central Conference.

Rocket League combines elements of soccer with fast-paced car mechanics. Teams of three players use rocket-powered vehicles to hit a ball into the opponent's goal. Teams with the most goals during a five-minute match win.

In the opener, Blinn head coach and Rocket League manager Kyle Murto said each of his starting players stepped up at some point during the three-round bout.

The Bucs defeated WSU Tech 2-1, 3-2, and 4-2.

"Every player contributed heavily to this win and set the tone for the rest of the day," Murto explained.

In game two, Murto said Johnson led the charge for Blinn to help the Bucs secure a 4-2 win in the opening round. Blinn went on to win round two 4-3 and round four 3-0 to take the series.

"We lost the third game, but we quickly regrouped, shut down any momentum Waubonsee tried to gain, and finished out the series on a high note," Murto said. "After last week's heartbreaking loss against Heartland Community College, the team really pulled together, worked hard in practice, and showed up in a big way. I'm proud of the effort and dedication they've put in, and we'll continue building off this success moving forward."

Up next for Blinn Rocket League is an NJCAAe doubleheader with Iowa Western Community College and Southwestern Illinois College beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 7.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
