Blinn League of Legends drops CLOL match to Salt Lake

The Buccaneers face MassBay in a CLOL bout on March 3

The Blinn College esports League of Legends team fell to Salt Lake Community College 2-1 in a best-of-three Collegiate League of Legends (CLOL) match Monday.

The Buccaneers are now 0-3 in the CLOL NJCAA Esports Conference.

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) where teams of five players select champions with unique abilities to work together to gain control over a map. The game's objective is to destroy the enemy Nexus while securing objectives like turrets, inhibitors, and neutral monsters. Teams must control a map and destroy a Nexus while contesting neutral objectives such as Dragons and Baron Nashor for powerful boosts.

Competing for Blinn were Alec Chojecki, Braxton Jones, Brian Shi, Chandler Collins, and Richard Le.

"It was a back-and-forth series throughout the match," Bucs assistant coach and League of Legends manager Ryan Lucich said. "We started off with a close game-one victory, but game two was a lot tougher as Salt Lake jumped out to an early lead which we were not able to come back from. In game three, we had a better start early, but once the bot lane duo of SLCC got rolling, they took over the map and we were not able to match their pace."

Lucich said his team will "go back to the drawing board" as it looks to earn its first win in a CLOL match against MassBay Community College at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 3.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 national championships since 1987.
