Blinn Valorant blanks Guilford Technical for first CVAL victory

The Buccaneers improved to 1-2 in Collegiate Valorant play

The Blinn College esports Valorant team swept Guilford Technical Community College 2-0 in a best-of-three Collegiate Valorant matchup Thursday.

With the win, the Buccaneers improved to 1-2 overall.

Valorant is a tactical, team-based, first-person shooter set in a near-future world. Teams of five players choose unique agents with distinct abilities, combining shooting skills with strategic use of each agent's toolkit. Teams alternate between attacking and defending. Attackers aim to plant a spike at one of the designated sites, while defenders try to prevent this or defuse the spike if planted. The first team to win 13 rounds claims victory. If both teams reach a tie at 12-12, overtime is triggered, and the match continues until one team wins by two rounds, with teams alternating between attacking and defending in each overtime round.

Hector Carielo, Zachary Sutton, Brendan Felicidario, Braeden Greiffenstein, and Ilies Dolliazal earned the victory for Blinn. The Bucs claimed the first map 13-8 and closed out the win with a 13-6 decision.

"This game really was a testament to the work our players have been putting in daily," Blinn assistant coach and Valorant manager Ryan Lucich said. "They've spent extra hours reviewing, developing plays, and building more synergy, and I'm happy that it finally showed in a match result. I have a feeling this team has a lot more wins ahead of them this season, and this is only the start."

The Bucs continue their Valorant season with a National Association of College Esports matchup against Florida International University at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
