Sixth-ranked Blinn places eighth at Islander Classic to kick off spring

Blinn freshmen Daniah Syed and Abigail O’Brien placed 21st and 24th in the field of 56

Blinn College women's golf opened spring play at the two-day Islander Classic on Monday and finished play Tuesday with an eighth-place showing at the Corpus Christi Country Club in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The sixth-ranked Buccaneers competed among 10 teams, including four NCAA Division I and II programs.

Host team Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earned the team crown.

Blinn had a tough day one as it posted team rounds of 42- and 43-over par, but bounced back at 24-over in round three.

"We just couldn't find our consistency on Monday. We were executing some things well but would let strokes get away in other areas," Blinn assistant coach Gary Belt said. "The team reset on Tuesday and had a solid start. We hit some great shots, putted well, and made several pars early in the day."

Blinn freshmen Daniah Syed and Abigail O'Brien led their team at 19-over and 20-over, respectively. Syed tied for 21st place while O'Brien was 24th out of 56 golfers.

"I was pleased with the way the team settled in to play well today," Belt added. "I hope we can carry this momentum into next week in Victoria."

Blinn returns to the links when it travels to Victoria, Texas, for the two-day Claude Jacobs Invitational hosted by the University of Houston-Victoria beginning Monday, Feb. 24.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
