Blinn begins spring with ninth-place finish at Rattler Invitational

The Blinn College men's golf team opened its spring campaign with a ninth-place finish at the two-day Rattler Invitational on Tuesday at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio.

The tournament, hosted by NCAA Division II program and tournament champion St. Mary's University, was heavily populated with NCAA DII teams (13 of 16), and yet the Buccaneers held their own. Blinn bested seven DII programs in the team standings.

Across three rounds of play, five Bucs carded a team total of 896 and finished 32-over par.

"It was a strong field, and the guys played solid in our first outing since October," Blinn head coach David Johnson said. "We made good mental decisions out there for the most part. We made some February swings, too, but that was to be expected. We also made some errors which cost us. We will get to work and hopefully correct some of those bigger numbers."

A total of 87 golfers competed at the tournament.

Freshman Jaxson Daniele led the Bucs in the individual standings with a tie for 21st place. Daniele shot 6-over and posted an impressive 3-under par 72 in the middle round.

Also finishing inside the top 40 for Blinn was sophomore Ben Jones, who tied for 37th at 9-over.

Next up for the Bucs is the two-day Claud Jacobs Invitational hosted by the University of Houston-Victoria starting Monday, Feb. 24, at the Victoria Country Club in Victoria, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
