No. 14 Blinn places 13th at loaded Collin Montgomerie Invitational

Buccaneer sophomores Volker Henkel and Gabe Herbst led Blinn with 39th- and 41st-place finishes

The 14th-ranked Blinn College men's golf team completed its run at the two-day Collin Montgomerie Invitational on Tuesday, and finished 13th among 14 teams in Sugar Land, Texas.

The Buccaneers' starting five of sophomores Ben Jones, Volker Henkel, and Gabe Herbst, and freshmen Sir Jones and Cody Peters, shot 66-over par across three rounds of play at Cypress-Sweetwater Country Club.

Eighth-ranked New Mexico Junior College finished 14-over for first place.

The tournament was hosted by Houston Christian University – an NCAA Division I program – and featured 11 other NCAA DI teams.

"We struggled with the speed of the greens this week when putting and chipping; we will get back to the basics of both of those areas," Blinn head coach David Johnson said. "We played with some pretty good NCAA DI schools, and it was good for the guys to experience that atmosphere. It will help us later in the season."

In the field of 78 golfers, Henkel paced the Bucs at 12-over for a six-way tie for 39th place. Herbst followed closely at 14-over for a three-way tie for 41st.

Up next, Blinn will hit the road for the two-day Hal Sutton Invitational hosted by Centenary College on Monday, March 17, in Bossier City, La.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 national championships since 1987.
