Blinn's Super Smash Bros., Call of Duty teams compete on busy night of NJCAAe play

The Buccaneers battled it out in a total of eight matches on Tuesday

The Blinn College esports team had a busy night of action Tuesday, as the Buccaneer Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Call of Duty teams competed in eight total NJCAA Esports (NJCAAe) matches.

In seven one-on-one NJCAAe Super Smash Bros., Blinn went 4-3 in the series of best-of-three tilts. One match – Kiara Molina versus an opponent from State Technical College of Missouri – was rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a crossover fighting game where players, either in one-on-one or four-on-four matches, aim to knock each other off a combat stage.

The objective is for players to inflict damage to increase their opponents' likelihood of being knocked off the platform. In singles play, each player has a set number of lives or "stocks," and the match is won by reducing the opponent's stocks to zero. In crew battles, teams take turns battling, with stock carryover. The team that eliminates all opposing players' stocks first wins. Series are often best-of-three or best-of-five.

On the night, Gabe Pipes fell 3-0 to St. Louis Community College before earning a 3-0 sweep of Wichita State University Tech; Molina defeated her opponent from Amarillo College 3-2; Joshua De Los Santos dropped a 3-1 decision to State Technical College of Missouri before bouncing back to defeat St. Louis Community College 3-0; and Gage College dropped a tough 3-2 decision to WSU Tech only to come back and knock off Dallas College Mountain View 3-0 to end the night.

"It was a packed night for our Smash team, with plenty of tight matches and hard-fought sets," Blinn assistant coach and Super Smash Bros manager Kyle Murto said. "While we faced some early struggles, the team showed incredible resilience by bouncing back after tough losses, and finished strong. Every match was a learning experience and we're proud of the adjustments our players made throughout the night."

Next up, Blinn Super Smash Bros. battles Coastal Bend College (three matches), Dallas College Eastfield (two matches), Dallas College Mountain View, Laredo College, and Amarillo College in one-on-one NJCAAe action Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Also on Tuesday, Blinn's Call of Duty squad fell to WSU Tech 3-1 in a best-of-five NJCAAe Central 2 Region battle.

The team of Aariz Ali, Sirr McCook, Isaias Nieto, and Travis Stansberry competed for the Bucs.

Blinn is now 0-1 in the Central 2 Region.

The matchup pitted the two teams against each other as they attempted to collect three wins across three modes of play in the first-person-shooter game:
  • Hardpoint: Teams secure rotating capture points, earning points for control. A team wins by reaching 250 points first.
  • Search and Destroy: Teams alternate attacking and defending, with the goal to plant or defuse an objective. The first team to win 6 rounds claims victory.
  • Control: Teams attack and defend two capture points, with limited lives adding an elimination aspect. The first team to win three rounds claims victory.
WSU earned two victories in the Hardpoint mode as well as Search and Destroy, while the Bucs picked up a win in Control.

"There are a lot of good reps to look over and review tomorrow, and I know the guys are excited to get back to work and come back stronger from this loss," said Blinn assistant coach Ryan Lucich, who manages the Call of Duty squad.

The Bucs get right back to it with a National Association of Collegiate Esports Call of Duty matchup against Long Beach City College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
