No. 8 Blinn battles past Panola for thrilling five-set Region 14 victory

The Buccaneers have won 17 consecutive matches and improved to 33-1 overall

The eighth-ranked Blinn College volleyball team outlasted a feisty Panola College squad for a thrilling five-set Region 14 victory Thursday in Carthage, Texas.

The Buccaneers prevailed 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 26-28, 15-10 to capture their 17th consecutive victory. Blinn improved to 33-1 overall and 9-1 in region play. The Bucs have also won each of their last eight region matches.

Blinn battled through unforced errors and a loud and enthusiastic Panola crowd, but found victory within a resilient hitting effort, strong blocking, and impressive digging.

"Panola is a good team with two really good hitters on the pin, a very good setter, and a good libero," Blinn head coach Gregg Whitis said. "Good teams find ways to win competitive matches against teams who play really hard and give Panola credit because they play really hard."

Blinn's attack produced 17 kills for sophomore hitter Olivia Stringer; 11 for freshman hitter Annika Brooks; and 10 for middle blocker Jana Cetkovic. Sophomore hitters Kaliko Schilling and Shilo Jones finished with seven apiece.

Sophomore setters Leah Hoss and Camden Bizot dished out 26 and 17 set assists, respectively.

Bizot also had three service aces, all of which came in the third set to help the Bucs pull away for a 2-1 set advantage.

After the Fillies rallied to win the fourth set and force a fifth, Blinn persevered thanks to a series of big plays late.

Schilling and Brooks gave the Bucs a handful of big kills, and Jones provided a big stuff block to send the visitors to victory.

On the floor, Hoss and Stringer racked up 18 digs each, while Bizot added 12. The Bucs finished with 83 total digs.

At the net, Cetkovic had a big game with three solo blocks and seven assists; Jones and sophomore middle blocker Karolina Karabasz had five assists apiece; and Brooks tacked on four assists.

Up next, Blinn hits the road for a pivotal region rematch against No. 7 Trinity Valley Community College at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, in Athens, Texas. The Cardinals sit atop the region standings with an 8-0 record, and a Bucs win would give them a season split against TVCC and increase their chances of earning the top seed for the upcoming Region 14 Tournament.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
