Funk's leadership, offensive breakout paying dividends for Buccaneers

Funk's nine goals this season lead Blinn and tied a single-season program record

Marguerite Funk's path to Blinn College was anything but traditional. Her impact since arriving has been exceptional.

With her final season in Blinn blue and white winding down, Funk has cemented her status as a team-first leader with a penchant for goal scoring. When Blinn's season comes to a close, Funk could finish her career as the program's single-season and career goals leader. It is an impressive rise for a player who nearly walked away from the game in high school.

"I was ready to give soccer up," said Funk. "I was losing the passion for the game. Then we made this deep run in the playoffs, and by the end of it, I realized how much I loved soccer and I wanted to keep playing."

Before Brazoswood High School's four-round run in the 2024 UIL Class 6A state playoffs reignited her love for the sport, Funk hadn't pursued any collegiate opportunities. When the season ended, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

"When you get to that point in the year, a lot of colleges have already done their recruiting and have found their players, so I started doing my own research," Funk said. "If I wanted to have an opportunity to keep playing, I was going to have to find it myself – so I did."

By then, Blinn head coach Alexandria Jackson had already wrapped up recruiting for the year. Funk wasn't on her radar — until an email changed everything.

"It's rare to finish recruiting and then have a player of Marguerite's caliber come to you looking for an opportunity," Jackson said. "We look at club teams and might get a hit on somebody through word of mouth, but you have a player who does her own legwork. She takes the initiative to create her own shot, and then you learn about her story, you watch her film, and see this amazing goal scorer, and immediately she's somebody you want on your team."

Funk's freshman season in 2024 showed promise as she adjusted to the collegiate game, scoring four goals and adding an assist to finish second on the team with nine points. The Buccaneers ended that season 7-7-1 with a first-round appearance in the Region 14 Tournament.

"The season wasn't what we wanted it to be. We felt like we left a lot on the pitch and didn't meet expectations," Funk said.

Jackson and assistant coach Marco Gonzalez-Salazar spent the offseason challenging their future sophomores, including Funk, to grow as leaders, while putting an emphasis on recruiting freshmen who would successfully complement their returning pieces.

"When Marguerite got here, she didn't say much," Jackson said. "She just went out and played hard, and she showed us a lot, but we believed she could have a much bigger impact both as a player and as a voice in our program. We felt that for us to succeed in 2025, those two things would need to happen. We had a conversation with Marguerite and told her that we saw leadership qualities in her that would help take this team where it needed to be."

Funk embraced the challenge. When the new class of freshmen arrived in August, she took an active role in welcoming them and fostering team chemistry.

"Relationships with your teammates are just as important as the talent on the field," Funk said. "You have to encourage and support the players around you because every player on a team is important. If you have that bond and that trust, that can be a big difference in how your team performs."

That connection — and her confidence — have translated into a breakout sophomore campaign. Funk's nine goals lead the team, tying the Blinn single-season record and placing her within two goals of matching the career program record of 15. Her leadership and offensive spark have propelled Blinn to an 8-3-2 overall record and a 6-3-2 mark in region play.

Jackson said the increase in Funk's offensive production this season is equal parts offensive design, Funk's growth and maturity as a player and leader, and a team-wide understanding of Blinn's overall goals.

"Our players understand where the ball needs to be, and the offense is designed to get the ball to our goal scorers," Jackson said. "When you have a group of players who put the team objectives above everything else, that allows you to succeed. Marguerite is a beneficiary of that mindset, but not in a selfish way. She will play whichever role is necessary to help this team win."

For Funk, scoring is just one part of leading.

"Whatever I have to do to put our team on top, I'm going to do it," she said. "If that means defense, then I'll do it. If that means scoring a goal, I'll do it. If that means a pass to a teammate for a goal, then that's what I'll do. I just want the team to win."

Much like the conclusion of her high school journey, Funk is unsure what the next chapter of her soccer career holds. This season could mark the end of a decade-long soccer voyage, but could also serve as a launching pad for a few more pages in her collegiate story. A climactic end to her Blinn run ultimately could be the deciding factor.

"Maybe a few offers will come my way, but I might have to go out again and find my own opportunity," Funk said. "In the meantime, I want to do what I can to help this team and this program be successful. That's my top priority."

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
