Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 22 Blinn handles Western Gulf for blowout victory in non-conference finale

The Buccaneers improved to 15-5 overall

The 22nd-ranked Blinn College women's basketball team made quick work of Western Gulf College and picked up a 71-29 victory Wednesday in its non-conference finale at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers never trailed as they improved to 15-5 overall this season.

Blinn raced out to a quick 7-0 lead and held a 16-8 advantage after the first period. In the second quarter, Western Gulf sank a 3-pointer to cut its deficit to five, but Blinn sophomore forward Jasmyn Jackson sank a jumper to begin a 27-5 run that ended any thoughts of an upset.

The Bucs went into halftime with a 43-16 cushion.

"Our non-conference slate is over, and we finished 10-4. With 14 freshmen on our roster and the tough non-conference schedule that we put together, to be 10-4 in those games is really good," Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. "All four of those losses came against ranked teams, and I told my players after tonight's game that I'm really proud of what they've accomplished so far. We have 10 games left — all in Region XIV — so we just need to get a little better every day so we're prepared for the postseason in March."

Leading Blinn against the Red Gales was freshman guard Ja'Nya Thomas, who scored 12 points. Freshman forward Biva Byrd and freshman guard Nala Richardson finished with 10 points apiece. Freshman guard Elizabeth Walton added nine points while freshman forward Tocarra Johnson tacked on eight.

"We all played together as a team tonight and moved the ball well, which is always great to see," said Byrd. "The goal from here on out now is going to be to play hard and win our final 10 regular-season games and hopefully carry that over into the region tournament."

The Bucs, who are currently in second place in the region standings, will stay home for a region showdown with Kilgore College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Kruse Center.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 45
NJCAA national championships since 1987.
