Blinn Call of Duty falls to Laredo College in NJCAAe regional championship

The Buccaneers are qualified for the NJCAAe national tournament and now await their seed in the nine-team tournament

The Blinn College esports Call of Duty team fell to Laredo College 3-0 in the NJCAA Esports Central Group 2 regional finals on Tuesday.

Despite the setback in the best-of-three series, the Buccaneers have a berth in the upcoming NJCAA Esports Call of Duty National Tournament. Blinn will begin play in the nine-time national tournament at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 12, though its opponent has yet to be announced. The tournament will feature three teams from Central Group 1, Central Group 2, and the East.

Tuesday's Call of Duty matchup pitted four Buccaneers against Laredo, with each team attempting to collect three wins across three modes of play in the first-person-shooter game:
  • Hardpoint: Teams secure rotating capture points, earning points for control. A team wins by reaching 250 points first.
  • Search and Destroy: Teams alternate attacking and defending, with the goal to plant or defuse an objective. The first team to win 6 rounds claims victory.
  • Control: Teams attack and defend two capture points, with limited lives adding an elimination aspect. The first team to win three rounds claims victory.
The team of Michael Allen, Josiah Koite, Isaias Nieto, and Joshua Russell competed for the Bucs.

"This series was much closer than the score would suggest," Blinn assistant coach and Call of Duty manager Ryan Lucich said.

The Bucs led 130-110 near the halfway point of the Hardpoint stipulation in the opening round before the Palominos rallied for the win. Blinn then fell 6-2 in the Search and Destroy round before again starting strong in the Control competition. The Bucs had a 2-0 cushion, but Laredo strung together three straight wins in the round to capture the sweep.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
