Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Blinn's offense finds rhythm in Blue Bell Classic rout of Arkansas Cossatot

Five different Buccaneers scored 10 or more points to help the team improve to 2-2

The Blinn College men's basketball team evened its record with a dominant 119-65 home win over the University of Arkansas Cossatot on opening day of the Blue Bell Classic on Friday at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers moved to 2-2 overall this season.

"Everybody got to play tonight, which was important for us, and we came out with a purpose from the very beginning," Blinn head coach Scott Schumacher said. "We guarded Cossatot extremely well and we were able to find our shot. I liked that Cossatot came right after us and pressed us with their defense, but we persevered on a night where I think everything clicked for us."

From the start, the Bucs were in complete control, using a flurry from freshman guard Dashawn Ceaser to build an early lead before surging to a 10-point cushion near the 15-minute mark of the first half.

Caesar scored six of Blinn's first nine points on a mid-range jump shot, a fadeaway jumper, and a pair of free throws. Sophomore forward London Maiden then scored on back-to-back contested layups, sophomore guard Reese Miller tacked on a nifty one-handed floater, and sophomore guard Jaden Andrew stole a Colts pass and turned it into a fastbreak layup for a 17-6 lead with 14:47 to go in the half.

"Every day in practice we run our sets and work on making sure everyone gets their hands on the basketball," Ceaser said. "It's hard to defend a team when everyone gets the ball and everyone can score."

A 17-5 run allowed the Bucs to virtually put the game away before halftime.

Freshman forward Ziyade Ndancky started the surge with a layup and freshman guard Jakeel Registe followed with a 3-pointer. Sophomore forward Anthony Isaac then buried a dunk before freshman guard Hosea Steele added a putback of his own miss and a layup.

Registe hit a fadeaway jumper followed by another jumper near the free-throw line to make it 32-11 with 9:48 left in the half.

Blinn kept finding the basket as it took a 65-33 advantage into the break.

"We played as a team and played together as one to keep up the intensity tonight," Steele said. "Nobody was selfish, we all touched the ball, and that opened up opportunities to score in bunches."

The Bucs kept up the pressure in the second half and with a 91-44 lead with 9:54 remaining, emptied their bench.

The lineup change did little to stall the Blinn offense as Steele pushed the Bucs over the 100-point mark on a pair of free throws with just over 7 minutes to go.

On the night, five Blinn players scored in double figures. Maiden tallied a team-best 19 points, while Ceaser followed closely with 18. Registe chipped in 13 and Steele and Ndancky tallied 10 apiece.

The Bucs conclude the Classic with a tilt against Dallas College Cedar Valley at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 national championships since 1987.
