No. 9 Blinn takes next step toward Region XIV crown with home sweep of Lee

The Buccaneers improved to 9-0 in region play while pushing their winning streak to 24 matches

The ninth-ranked Blinn College volleyball team maintained its unbeaten Region XIV record with a home sweep of Lee College on Tuesday at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers earned a 25-9, 25-13, 25-16 win over the Navigators to secure their 10th consecutive sweep and pushed their winning streak to 24. Blinn has not lost a match since Aug. 31.

The victory was also significant in the career of Blinn head coach Terry Gamble, who captured his 1,000th NJCAA victory. For his career, Gamble is now 1,064-345 between the NCAA and NJCAA levels. The Bucs are now 31-2 on the year and 9-0 in region play with five regular-season contests remaining.

"We didn't consistently play the tempo I would have liked tonight, but I thought we still played well," Gamble said. "Our serve-receive was good and we got a chance to play a lot of kids off the bench which is always a good thing."

The Bucs' victory was decisive outside of a few moments at the end of the second set and the beginning of the third in which the team's focus appeared off track. The temporary lull led to some Blinn hitting errors, blocking gaffes, and a couple of serve-receive mistakes. However, as it has done all season, Blinn quickly righted the ship to finish off Lee.

"You can definitely feel a lull when you're in one, because you see the mistakes happen as the energy starts to go down," freshman outside hitter MaKenna Loo said, "but we always do a pretty good job of bringing each other back up with uplifting words and support. We've just been able to persevere through our bond as a team and our overall competitiveness."

On the night, NJCAA Division I kills leader and sophomore right-side hitter Kellen Dorotik racked up a team-leading 16, while freshman outside hitter Greta Rakow and Loo added nine and six respectively. Freshman setter Leah Hoss had a good night creating offense for the Bucs as she tallied 20 set assists. Freshman setter Bromli Watson chipped in nine.

Blinn's floor defense was anchored by Loo and sophomore libero Cierra Pesak, who posted 12 digs apiece. At the net Dorotik had a team-high four solo blocks, freshman middle blocker Karolina Karabasz had three, and Watson and freshman middle blocker Jana Cetkovic tacked on two each.

With just a handful of matches left ahead of the Region XIV Tournament, Blinn is in prime position to secure the top seed in the tournament as it looks to secure a fifth consecutive trip to the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship tournament. The Bucs currently lead No. 14 Trinity Valley Community College and No. 15 Navarro College – which are tied for second place – by two games in the standings. The top seed in the tournament would be a nice bonus for the Bucs, who host the three-day competition beginning Nov. 8.

"Our record and finishing region play undefeated means something to our team," said Pesak. "We know that winning out in the regular season will do a lot for our chances of getting an at-large bid for nationals, or just getting that top seed and bettering our shot at winning the tournament to get the nationals bid outright. We all understand that we still have work to do and I think we're focused on finishing that job right now."

Up next for the Bucs is a region road clash against Panola College at 6 p.m. on Friday in Carthage, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
