No. 10 Midland erases 12-point deficit to upend Blinn at Wrangler Shootout

The Buccaneers are now 6-1 overall ahead of a Shootout tilt against New Mexico Military Institute

The Blinn College men's basketball team was unable to hold onto a double-digit lead in the second half as No. 10 Midland College rallied for a 71-68 victory in the Wrangler Shootout on Thursday in Odessa, Texas.

The Buccaneers lost for the first time this season and are now 6-1 overall.

In its second consecutive appearance at Odessa College's annual tournament, Blinn went toe-to-toe with Midland for 40 minutes.

The Bucs built a 33-29 halftime lead and extended their advantage to 54-42 with 10:05 left to play. From there, the Chaps went on an offensive tear as they outscored Blinn 29-14 the rest of the way.

"I thought we played really, really good basketball, but in the last five or six minutes of the game it got away from us," Bucs head coach Scott Schumacher said. "We never could get any defensive stops when we needed a stop at the end. Midland got stops and scored on offense and that was the game."

Blinn had possession with a chance to tie the game in the final 5 seconds of play, but its 3-point attempt at the buzzer was blocked.

"We have a nice basketball team," Schumacher added, "but the difference between winning and losing is so fine. We just have to clean some things up and keep moving forward."

Sophomore guard Masiah Gilyard produced a double-double for the Bucs with 16 points and 13 rebounds. He went 10 for 11 at the free throw line and also dished out four assists. Sophomore guard Nick Folk had 13 points, sophomore forward Dresean Knight finished with 13, eight rebounds, and a block, and freshman wing Anthony Isaac had 10 points with a blocked shot.

Blinn continues play in the Shootout when it takes on New Mexico Military Institute at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 44?NJCAA national championships since 1987.
