Second half goals lead Blinn to Region 14 shutout of Paris

The Buccaneers have won three consecutive region matches without allowing a goal

The Blinn College women's soccer team blanked Region 14 foe Paris Junior College 2-0 on Saturday at Rankin Field in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in region play with their third consecutive region victory and shutout.

Following a defensive stalemate in the first half, the Bucs broke through in the 54th minute. After sophomore midfielder Taylor Bull played the ball into the Paris box, freshman forward Chelsea Mentado gathered possession and weaved around the Dragons' goalkeeper before firing a shot into the net.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the 65th minute when Mentado fed sophomore midfielder Saya Shiratsuki near the right corner of the Paris box. Shiratsuki roped a wide-open shot past the outstretched arm of the Dragons' keeper.

The Bucs outshot the Dragons 17-4.

Sophomore goalkeeper Reese Cauthen made two saves for Blinn to earn her fourth win and third clean sheet of the season.

"Three consecutive victories and shutouts are a great step forward for this group," Blinn head coach Alexandria Jackson said. "On Friday, we started fast; today we started slow, but we've challenged our players to be more consistent, more disciplined, and mentally tougher, and we're starting to see that translate onto the field.

"I'm proud of the way they responded and competed for 90 minutes. We know there's still a lot of work to do, but this is the standard we need to continue building on."

Blinn's season resumes on the road against region rival and eighth-ranked Navarro College at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, in Corsicana, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
