Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Well-rounded effort helps No. 16 Blinn sweep No. 9 Panola

The Buccaneers received contributions all over the court as they improved to 19-4 on the year

The 16th-ranked Blinn College volleyball team went on the road Thursday and came back with an impressive 25-23, 25-19, 25-21 sweep of No. 9 Panola College in Carthage, Texas.

The Region 14 victory pushed the Buccaneers' record to 19-4 overall and 2-3 in region play.

It was Blinn's second consecutive region triumph and 14th sweep of the season.

Sophomore hitter Aliyah Harris led the Buccaneers with 16 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Alana Asante, freshman hitter Akira Smallwood, and freshman hitter Nevaeh English each recorded seven. Harris hit .361 for the match, while Asante hit .400 and English hit .500.

Freshman setter Skylar Herring recorded 33 assists, six digs, two aces and two total blocks. Sophomore libero/ defensive specialist Natalia Silva added four aces, while Smallwood and Harris each recorded eight digs. Sophomore hitter Kassandra De La Garza contributed five kills, five digs and two total blocks. Freshman middle blocker London King was solid at the net with two solo blocks and two assists.

Blinn hit .256 as a team and finished with 12 combined blocks (six solos and 12 assists) and 51 digs.

"We reduced our errors tonight," Blinn head coach Gregg Whitis said. "We played pretty clean from a hitting standpoint."

The Buccaneers committed just 14 errors on 121 attacks, an 11.5% error rate.

"When you take 121 swings at the ball and you only make 14 errors, that's pretty good," Whitis said.

Blinn also received key contributions from its serving game, particularly when the Buccaneers needed to overcome deficits in the second and third sets.

"We had some really good service performances," Whitis added.

Freshman libero/defensive specialist Kaylen Ottmers served two rounds in the second set and helped Blinn rally by disrupting Panola's offense. Whitis also praised freshman libero/defensive specialist Sophia Green for her stubbornness at the service line.

"Ottmers and Green made a big, big difference for us in the second and third sets," Whitis said. "They applied the kind of service pressure that we haven't seen since the first couple weeks of the season."

Whitis said Ottmers "served the ball where we wanted it to be served," adding that she helped get Panola out of system while giving the Bucs an opportunity to come back and take the lead.

Green provided a similar spark in the third set, when Blinn overcame a 6-0 deficit.

"Green was back there not giving Panola an inch," Whitis said.

Freshman hitter Nevaeh English also provided a major lift after entering during the second set. All seven of her kills came in the set.

"English came in during the middle set and kind of went crazy and helped us close out that set," Whitis said. "We won on the road against a top-10 team, and you need different people to win on the road, and we got that tonight."

Up next, Blinn visits McLennan Community College for a non-region match at 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, in Waco, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
