Blinn earns first win with 12-3 home rout of North American

Freshman forward Chelsea Mentado scored three goals for the Buccaneers

Blinn College women's soccer earned its first victory of the season Saturday, overpowering North American University 12-3 in its home opener at Hohlt Park in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers improved to 1-1 with the win and outshot NAU 34-8.

North American struck first, but Blinn quickly answered.

Sophomore midfielder Taylor Bull scored the equalizer in the 10th minute before putting the Bucs ahead with another goal less than a minute later.

Blinn added two more goals in the 18th minute, with sophomore midfielder Kaelynn Pablo and freshman forward Chelsea Mentado finding the back of the net to give the Bucs a 4-1 advantage.

NAU cut into the deficit with a goal in the 29th minute, but sophomore Lilly Arellano answered one minute later to make it 5-2.

North American added another goal in the 40th minute to make it a 5-3 game heading into halftime.

After the break, it was all Blinn.

Freshman forward Amanda Millar extended the Bucs' lead with a goal in the 50th minute, and Blinn added six more goals to put the match away.

Freshman forward Vianney Adame scored back-to-back goals, while sophomore forward Khadeeja Rhoden added two goals of her own. Mentado completed her hat trick with another goal, and sophomore midfielder Saya Shiratsuki also found the back of the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Reese Cauthen made two saves to earn the victory.

Head coach Alexandria Jackson was pleased with the way her team bounced back following a tough season-opener against Butler Community College.

"It was a great response from the players tonight after a tough defeat on Thursday," Jackson said. "We started off a bit slow due to the quick turnaround, but once Taylor Bull put the ball in the back of the net, we were rolling. In the second half, you could see the style of soccer we want to play."

Blinn returns to action Friday, Aug. 28, when it opens Region 14 play against No. 6 Tyler Junior College at noon in Tyler, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
