The Blinn College baseball program was once again well represented during the Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft on Saturday and Sunday.

For a second consecutive year, three former Buccaneers were selected by MLB organizations, including the third-highest draft pick in Blinn baseball history.

"Draft day is one of the coolest and most rewarding parts of this job," Blinn head coach Dusty Hart said. "Knowing we played a part in helping these guys achieve their goals makes all the blood, sweat, and tears worth it. It reminds you that you're making a difference in their lives and motivates you even more. Seeing their dreams come true puts as big a smile on your face as winning any baseball game."

On Saturday, former Blinn first baseman Caden Ferraro (2024-25) was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the third round with the 86th overall pick.

Ferraro, who starred as a power-hitting utility man at Texas Tech University this spring, became Blinn's highest draft selection since Brandon Larson was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round in 1997. Larson played in parts of four major league seasons for the Reds between 2001-04. The only other Buccaneer to be drafted higher than Ferraro was Don Baylor, who was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round in 1967. Baylor went on to enjoy a 19-year major league career that included the 1979 American League Most Valuable Player Award.

Ferraro spent two seasons with the Bucs, highlighted by a stellar 2024 campaign in which he batted .384 with 18 home runs and 82 RBIs while helping Blinn win its first NJCAA Division I national championship. He finished his Blinn career with a .376 batting average, 36 home runs, and 156 RBIs in 120 games.

"To even get this far is unreal, so I'm just really excited," Ferraro said. "Every kid who plays this game dreams of playing in the Majors, so to have this opportunity to continue my baseball journey is special. The really important thing for me now is making the next step. It's not about where you get drafted, it's about how you develop, and I'm ready to go as far as I can."

Pitcher Lucas Davenport heard his name called early on Sunday, going to the Boston Red Sox with the 156th overall pick in the fifth round.

Like Ferraro, Davenport played a pivotal role in Blinn's 2024 national championship season. In his lone campaign with the Bucs, he went 10-2 with a 3.75 earned run average and 86 strikeouts. He then dominated at the NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series, earning three victories, including a complete-game win over Northwest Florida State College in the championship game to claim Pitcher of the Tournament honors.

Davenport spent the past two seasons at Baylor University.

Ferraro and Davenport became the third and fourth members of Blinn's 2024 national championship team to reach professional baseball. In 2025, pitcher Bryson Dudley was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the seventh round following a season at Texas State University, and infielder Connor McGinnis was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 10th round after one year at the University of Houston.

Rounding out Blinn's 2026 draft class was catcher Matt Quintanar, who was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 16th round. Quintanar spent one season with the Bucs in 2025 before transferring to Texas Tech, where he reunited with Ferraro this past spring. Quintanar batted .411 with 15 home runs and 60 RBIs during his lone season at Blinn.

Additionally, pitcher Brendan Sweeney signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Phillies on Sunday. Another key piece to Blinn's championship season in 2024, Sweeney went 8-2 with a 4.84 ERA and 67 punchouts across 83 2/3 innings for the Bucs.

Sweeney spent the 2025 season with the University of South Carolina before transferring to Mississippi State University for the 2026 campaign.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
