Buccaneers snap postseason drought with 10-inning win over Navarro

Blinn earned its first region tournament victory since 2021 on an error in the bottom of the 10th

The Blinn College softball team earned a dramatic 2-1 victory over Navarro College in 10 innings during the opening round of the Region 14 Tournament on Wednesday in Houston, securing the Buccaneers' first postseason win in four years.

"It was critical for us to get this first win and make things a little easier on ourselves," Bucs head coach Rick Church said. "We got the monkey off our back and got a taste of postseason success for the first time in a couple of years, and that was important for this team. Hopefully this sets the tone for the rest of the tournament."

The victory snapped a streak of 10 consecutive region tournament losses for the Buccaneers, who earned their first postseason victory since 2021.

Blinn and Navarro were locked in a pitchers' duel throughout the afternoon as sophomore Brynn Gallamore and Bulldogs sophomore Triniti Tapley matched each other inning for inning.

Navarro broke through first in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, the Bulldogs delivered an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

The Buccaneers answered in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Sophomore outfielder Halle Scheel and sophomore first baseman Daniela Lopez ripped back-to-back singles with one out before a wild pitch allowed Scheel to race home from third base and even the score at 1-1.

Gallamore and Tapley continued to trade zeros from there.

Gallamore's outing came to an end with one out in the top of the 10th inning after she tossed 135 pitches. She allowed one earned run on seven hits while striking out seven and walking three.

Sophomore pitcher Madisyn Bracknell entered in relief with runners on first and third and one out, but escaped the jam by inducing a flyout and a lineout to keep the game tied.

"Today was all about pitching," Church added. "Brynn did a fantastic job for us, and so did Tapley. Both pitchers did their jobs today."

Blinn then capitalized on a wild sequence in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

Freshman designated hitter Presli Moebes singled with one out before freshman pinch runner Avery Marquart entered and stole second base.

Six pitches later, freshman outfielder Skylar Flanagan hit a ground ball to second. Navarro recorded the force out at first, but after Marquart advanced to third on the play, the Bulldogs attempted to catch her leaning off the bag. The throw to third sailed over the third baseman's head and into foul territory, allowing Marquart to score the game-winning run.

"We were fortunate to get a baserunner on in that inning, and sometimes you just need a break to go your way, and it did," Church said.

Blinn improved to 32-17 overall with the win.

The Buccaneers finished with five hits on the afternoon, led by Flanagan's two-hit performance. Bracknell earned the victory in relief and improved to 11-6 on the season.

Blinn advances to face fifth-ranked Trinity Valley Community College in the Region 14 Tournament semifinals at 5 p.m. Thursday in Houston. Trinity Valley advanced with a 12-5 win over Galveston College on Wednesday.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
