No. 5 Blinn splits with Coastal Bend to win Region 14 South series

The Buccaneers will host Navarro for a non-region tilt on April 6

The fifth-ranked Blinn College baseball team earned a split and secured a series victory Friday in a Region 14 South doubleheader against Coastal Bend College in Beeville, Texas.

The Buccaneers dropped the opener 13-3 in six innings before bouncing back for a 9-2 win in the finale. Blinn improved to 27-10 overall and 16-5 in the South, taking three of four games in the series and winning the season series 5-2.

"The first game got away from us because we didn't make plays when we had a chance," Blinn head coach Dusty Hart said. "We told the guys to flush that first game and come back and win the series, and that's exactly what they did. That was really good to see."

Coastal Bend pulled away in game one with a seven-run sixth inning to trigger the run rule.

The Cougars struck first in the opening frame before Blinn answered in the second on an RBI double from sophomore outfielder Reece Lunsford. Coastal regained the lead in the third, but sophomore infielder Hunter Smolinski evened the score at 2-2 with an RBI single.

The hosts added four runs in the fifth and tacked on seven more in the sixth. An error accounted for the Buccaneers' final run.

Blinn finished with five hits, led by sophomore utility player Benji Barrera, who went 2 for 3.

Redshirt freshman Luke Ekdall (4-5) took the loss after allowing nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits with two walks and eight strikeouts across 5 2/3 innings.

The Buccaneers flipped the script in game two behind a trio of dominant pitching performances.

Redshirt freshman Travis Minard delivered his third consecutive quality start, improving to 3-0 on the year. He allowed two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks over five innings.

"That was a big performance and a big win for Travis in a big spot," Hart said. "He limited the damage and did his job."

Freshman Trevor Moore followed with three stellar innings, allowing one hit, walking one, and striking out five. Sophomore Hudson Melaerts closed the door with a perfect ninth, striking out two.

"Trevor came in and didn't give Coastal Bend an inch," Hart said. "We got exactly what we needed from him and Hudson."

With Blinn's pitching in control, the Bucs broke open a tight game late.

Smolinski jumpstarted the offense with a leadoff home run — his 10th of the season — and Lunsford added an RBI single in the first for a 2-0 lead. Coastal Bend answered with a run in the bottom half.

Blinn extended its advantage to 3-1 in the third on a sacrifice fly from sophomore infielder Drew Britton and made it 4-1 in the fourth on an RBI groundout from redshirt freshman catcher Drew Garcia.
The Cougars scored their final run in the fourth.

The Buccaneers pulled away late, adding a run in the eighth on an RBI groundout from Lunsford before a four-run ninth. Britton delivered an RBI double, Barrera drew a bases-loaded walk, and Lunsford capped the scoring with an RBI single.

Lunsford led the offense with three of Blinn's 11 hits and two RBIs. Tuxhorn and Barrera added two hits apiece, while Britton drove in two runs.

Blinn returns to action at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 6, when it hosts Navarro College at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham, Texas. The contest marks the Buccaneers' final non-region game of the regular season before a stretch of 14 consecutive Region 14 South matchups.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
