No. 5 Buccaneers keep rolling with blowout of Wharton County

Blinn concludes its regular season with a twin bill at Wharton County on Friday

Even with the circumstances changed, the result remained the same.

Fresh off its Region 14 South title, No. 5 Blinn College baseball continued its season-ending surge with a 15-7, eight-inning victory over Wharton County Junior College on Tuesday at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers earned their season-high sixth consecutive win and improved to 38-12 overall and 26-7 in South play.

"It was definitely a good day," Blinn head coach Dusty Hart said. "One day after an emotional victory where you won the South, the guys refused to have a letdown and continued to play good baseball."

Blinn clinched its fourth consecutive South championship with an 18-11 triumph over the Pioneers on Monday in Wharton, Texas, and carried that momentum into Tuesday's matchup.

After Wharton County took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Bucs answered immediately. Sophomore Reece Lunsford scored on a wild pitch before freshman catcher/designated hitter Zachary Tuxhorn launched a two-run home run — his 11th of the season — to left field for a 3-2 edge.

The offensive outburst continued in the second inning. Sophomore Drew Britton blasted a no-doubt three-run homer (his seventh) into the trees beyond right field, and after Tuxhorn drew a walk, freshman utility player Dane Perry added a two-run shot to right to extend the lead to 8-2.

The Pioneers plated a run in the third, but Tuxhorn responded with an RBI groundout in the bottom half of the inning.

In the fourth, redshirt freshman catcher Drew Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and sophomore outfielder Brady Sullivan followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 11-3.

Wharton County closed the gap with a four-run fifth inning but got no closer. Freshman third baseman Broty Mattox answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame to push the lead back to five runs.

In the seventh, Perry struck again with his second homer of the game — a shot to center field — giving him nine on the season. Mattox later added an RBI double in the inning.

Britton's RBI single in the eighth capped the scoring and invoked the run rule.

Blinn finished with 14 hits and 14 walks.

Perry led the way with a 4-for-4 performance that included a double, three runs, and three RBIs. A natural catcher who has transitioned to the outfield, Perry has emerged as one of Blinn's rising power threats after beginning the season on the bench.

"Good players always figure out a way to get on the field," Hart said. "Every player's learning curve is different, and sometimes it just takes a little time to adjust. He's learned a new position, he's overcoming that adversity, and he's developing and getting better. You love to see it."

Britton had two hits, four RBIs, and three walks, while Tuxhorn added two hits and two RBIs. Sophomore utility player Kason Atkins chipped in two hits.

Freshman redshirt pitcher Luke Ekdall improved to 5-6 on the season with four innings of steady work, allowing three unearned runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Sophomore Jack Garza recorded two-thirds of an inning and allowed four earned runs. Freshman Corby Wagoner followed with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and sophomore Matt Taylor tossed a scoreless eighth.

The series concludes with a season-ending doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday in Wharton.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
