No. 19 Blinn softball sweeps Coastal Bend behind dominant pitching

The Buccaneers have won six consecutive games, all in Region 14 South play

A pair of dominant pitching performances and timely offense led No. 19 Blinn College softball to a Region 14 South doubleheader sweep of Coastal Bend College on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers won 8-0 in five innings in game one before adding a 5-0 victory in the finale at Hohlt Park in Brenham, Texas. Blinn also completed a four-game regular-season sweep of the Cougars.

Blinn (26-12, 10-4 South) pushed its winning streak to six games behind shutout efforts from sophomore pitchers Brynn Gallamore and Madisyn Bracknell.

"Give credit to Brynn and Madisyn for their combined performances today," Bucs head coach Rick Church said. "Twelve innings of scoreless softball isn't easy to do, so give them a lot of credit."

Blinn's pitching and defense also combined for six 1-2-3 innings.

"That kind of efficiency is great to see and could be a sign of things to come," Church added.

Gallamore (14-6) was sharp in the opener, needing just 56 pitches (43 strikes) to complete a one-hit shutout. She struck out five and did not issue a walk while posting her 14th complete game of the season.

"I just went into my start with the game plan of getting ahead in the count and forcing hitters to put the ball in play," Gallamore said. "Our offense and defense really had my back today, and that made it fun to go out there and compete each inning."

The Bucs took control early, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings.

Freshman utility player Lexis Moss opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first before sophomore infielder Annie Beckendorf followed with a run-scoring base hit to make it 2-0.

In the second, freshman outfielder Skylar Flanagan added an RBI single and Moss drove in another run with a double to extend the lead to 4-0.

Blinn ended the game in the fifth with a four-run frame to trigger the run rule.

After a walk and a single began the inning, a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball brought in a run. Following a Coastal Bend error, sophomore pitcher/infielder Kacie Dudensing added an RBI single, and sophomore catcher/infielder Cadence Wiese capped the win with an RBI double.

Blinn totaled 10 hits and drew six walks in the opener.

Flanagan led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance from the leadoff spot, adding two RBIs and two runs scored.

"It's my job to set the table for the rest of our lineup, and I just worked to get on base today," Flanagan said. "We focused on doing our individual jobs at the plate, and that helped us string together good at-bats and score runs."

Moss finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Bracknell (8-3) matched Gallamore's effort in the finale, allowing five hits in earning her eighth complete game. She struck out four and did not walk a batter while tossing 51 of her 78 pitches for strikes.

Blinn again struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning.

Wiese delivered a two-run single, and Beckendorf followed with an RBI base hit to give the Bucs a quick advantage.

An error plated another run in the third before freshman infielder Brianna Moreno added an RBI single in the fourth to make it 5-0.

Flanagan, sophomore outfielder Halle Scheele, and Moreno — the top three hitters in Blinn's batting order — recorded two hits apiece as part of Blinn's nine-hit effort.

Up next, the Buccaneers face Angelina College in a South doubleheader. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the games have been moved to Friday due to inclement weather, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. in Lufkin, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
