Buccaneers fall to Wranglers on field goal in double overtime

Blinn concludes its regular season with a road trip to No. 5 Trinity Valley on Oct. 24

In a game that featured 12 touchdowns, a 21-point lead, and a furious fourth-quarter rally, the Blinn College football team came agonizingly close to a Homecoming victory Saturday at Cub Stadium in Brenham, Texas.

In the end, however, two missed field goals — one as regulation expired and another in overtime — proved costly as Cisco College escaped with a 45-42 double-overtime Southwest Junior College Football Conference victory.

"I was proud of the way the kids fought the entire game," Blinn head coach Ryan Mahon said. "It's unfortunate to lose that way. The game of football has ups and downs, and sometimes this is the way things go."

The Buccaneers (4-4, 2-4 SWJCFC) jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead behind a defensive touchdown and two offensive scores.

Freshman defensive back Ryan Johnson opened the scoring by recovering a fumble by Cisco quarterback Lior Mendji in the Wrangler backfield and returning it 37 yards for a touchdown with 12:50 remaining in the first quarter.

Following a Cisco punt, sophomore running back Bryson Batts extended Blinn's lead with a 1-yard touchdown run at the 7:22 mark. The Bucs added another score after freshman linebacker Sterling Bright recovered Mendji's second fumble, setting up an 11-yard scoring run by sophomore quarterback Jack Emerson with six minutes remaining in the quarter.

Cisco answered with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to cut Blinn's lead to 21-14 at halftime. The Wranglers also missed a 28-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Emerson restored Blinn's two-touchdown advantage in the third quarter, connecting with sophomore wide receiver Savion Conteh for a 31-yard touchdown pass with 6:30 remaining. Cisco responded with a quarterback keeper to make it 28-21 before tying the game at 28-28 on a touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter.

A strong kickoff return by Batts helped set up Blinn's next score. The speedster returned the kickoff to the Cisco 49-yard line, and freshman running back Chad Gasper Jr. finished the drive with a 2-yard scamper run to put the Bucs back in front, 35-28, with 11:56 remaining.

Cisco answered with another touchdown pass to tie the game before taking its first lead of the afternoon, 42-35, on a 7-yard rushing score with 4:45 left.

Blinn responded in spectacular fashion. With 4:01 remaining, Emerson found sophomore wide receiver Jayphon Duncan on a deep ball near the Cisco 37-yard line, and Duncan weaved through four Wrangler defenders on his way to a 64-yard touchdown. The score tied the game at 42-42.

After forcing a Cisco punt, the Bucs had a chance to win in regulation, but a 35-yard field goal attempt missed as time expired, sending the game to overtime.

Blinn's defense came up with a critical stop in the first overtime. Freshman defensive end Chris Carbin disrupted Cisco's quarterback on second-and-20 before teaming with sophomore linebacker Caleb Allen for a strip-sack on third-and-20. The Wranglers recovered the fumble, but their ensuing fourth-down pass attempt fell incomplete, turning the ball over to Blinn on downs.

The Bucs then had an opportunity to secure the victory, but a 28-yard field goal attempt missed, sending the contest to a second overtime.

Blinn possessed the ball first in the second overtime and faced fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line. Emerson was stopped just short of the goal line, turning possession over to Cisco. The Wranglers made the most of their opportunity, converting a 22-yard field goal to secure the 45-42 victory.

The loss dealt a significant blow to Blinn's conference playoff hopes, though the Bucs have not been mathematically eliminated from contention. Blinn will need to defeat No. 5 Trinity Valley Community College in next week's regular-season finale and receive favorable results in other conference matchups to earn a playoff berth.

The Bucs will travel to face Trinity Valley at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in Athens, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
