Game-ending play at the plate spoils Blinn's Region XIV Tournament opener

The Buccaneers will battle San Jacinto College-South in the consolation round at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday

A game-ending out at the plate spoiled Blinn College softball's Region XIV Tournament opener Saturday in Bossier City, La.

The top-seeded Buccaneers staged a late-game rally against fourth-seeded Navarro College, but with the tying run on third base, a flyout to left field was followed by a one-hop throw to home plate that cut down the Blinn baserunner and sent the Bulldogs to a 6-5, first-round victory.

"Navarro was ready to play right out of the gate today," Bucs head coach Rick Church said. "We finally got going in the fourth inning and had a chance to tie things up, but that was an unfortunate way for the game to end. Hopefully this inspires us to battle deep into the consolation bracket."

The Bucs will continue play in the eight-team, double-elimination bracket with a matchup against Region XIV South rival and third-seeded San Jacinto College-South at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Saturday's ballgame was all Navarro early, as the Bulldogs posted a five-spot in the top of the second inning.

Blinn got going when sophomore Bailey Boetjer was hit by a pitch with one out in the fourth and crossed the plate on freshman Cadence Wiese's ninth home run of the season.

Bucs sophomore Grace Bracken added a solo shot to open the fifth.

Navarro got one back in the sixth to make it 6-3.

Wiese struck again in the home half of the sixth with a solo shot to right field to bring her team within two.

In the seventh, sophomores Bella De Los Santos and T'Era Garrett singled and doubled, respectively, and freshman Halle Scheel plated the final run of the ballgame with a sacrifice fly to left.

De Leon kept the inning going when she reached on an error to put Garrett on third base, but Boetjer flew out to left and Garrett was thrown out at home to end the game.

Blinn finished with seven hits, led by Wiese's two-homer, three-RBI performance.

Sophomore Paige Bunting absorbed the loss following 5 1/3 innings in the pitcher's circle. She allowed six earned runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
