Blinn powers past Alvin for sweep of Region XIV South twin bill

The Buccaneers face No. 22 Galveston in a pivotal South doubleheader Wednesday

The Blinn College softball team powered its way to a Region XIV South doubleheader sweep of Alvin Community College on Monday at Hohlt Park in Brenham, Texas.

The Buccaneers defeated the Dolphins 9-2 and 8-3.

"We got two much-needed wins today," Blinn head coach Rick Church said. "Paige Bunting settled in to get another complete-game win, and Madisyn Bracknell did well before Brynn Gallamore came in to close it out. A couple multi-run innings in both games on offense were big for us, and hopefully we can use the momentum heading into a big doubleheader with Galveston on Wednesday."

Bunting led Blinn (15-21 overall, 11-5 South) in the opener with a strong effort in the pitcher's circle. She went the distance while allowing two earned runs on five hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts. She won her third consecutive start and improved to 7-9.

The two teams played a close game until the fifth inning, which saw the Bucs take control with a six-run outburst.

Leading 3-2 heading into the home half of the frame, a run-scoring error and a sacrifice fly off the bat off freshman Cadence Wiese got Blinn started, while a RBI double and run-scoring single from freshmen Annie Beckendorf and Kacie Dudensing, respectively made it 8-2. Freshman Madysen Taylor walked with the bases loaded to cap the big inning.

Blinn sophomore Bella De Los Santos got the Bucs on the board in the first inning with an RBI single, and Beckendorf added a two-run home run – her fifth of the season – in the fourth.

Beckendorf (four RBIs) and De Los Santos led Blinn's nine-hit attack with two apiece.

"Offensively, we just need to keep this confidence we have right now and keep swinging and placing the ball in the right spots," Beckendorf said. "I know for me personally and probably for some of the other freshmen on the team, we're finally getting comfortable and finding a groove playing back-to-back ballgames twice a week and I think you're seeing that in our results."

In game two, another offensive outburst helped the Bucs past the Dolphins.

Blinn led 3-1 heading into the fourth when a five-run surge put the hosts in complete control.

Sophomore Darian DeLeon hit a two-run single, De Los Santos reached on an error to drive in another run, Wiese drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and De Los Santos came home on a passed ball.

Alvin got two runs back in the fifth.

Sophomore Bailey Boetjer got Blinn on the board first with a three-run homer – her team-leading ninth of the year – in the first. The Dolphins made it 3-1 in the third.

The Bucs finished with eight hits, including three for DeLeon and sophomore T'Era Garrett.

In the circle, Bracknell was cruising before an injury ended her outing prematurely. She worked 4 1/3 and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. She earned the victory to improve to 2-2.

Gallamore earned the eight-out save after allowing one hit and one walk while punching out a pair.

Up next, Blinn gets a chance to trim its deficit in the Region XIV South standings when it battles Galveston College in a home doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in Brenham. The Bucs are currently in second place in the South and trail Galveston by four games.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 national championships since 1987.
