Blinn gets game-one win over Alvin but Dolphins rally for split of Region XIV South twin bill

The Buccaneers travel to Galveston on March 15

Blinn College softball split a Region XIV South twin bill at Alvin Community College on Wednesday in Alvin, Texas.

The Buccaneers earned a 7-5 victory in game one before the Dolphins bounced back for an 8-5 victory in the finale.

Blinn moved to 5-15 overall and 2-2 in the South.

In the opener, the Bucs raced out to a 7-0 lead and held on as Alvin staged a late-game rally. The Dolphins scored five runs in the fifth, but couldn't close their gap any further as Blinn shut the hosts down in the sixth and seventh frames.

The Bucs opened the scoring in the second when freshman Kacie Dudensing scored on an error.

In the third, sophomore Bailey Boetjer lined an RBI double to left field and freshman Brynn Gallamore added an RBI single to make it 3-0.

In the fourth inning, Cadence Wiese smacked a two-run double, freshman Annie Beckendorf drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Boetjer drove in another run on an RBI groundout for a 7-0 Blinn advantage.

The Bucs finished with seven hits, led by two for freshman Halle Scheel.

In the pitcher's circle, sophomore Paige Bunting picked up the win following 5 innings of work. She allowed five earned runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Madisyn Bracknell pitched two scoreless frames to close out the game and earn the save. She didn't allow a hit or a walk and struck out four.

Blinn looked poised for a sweep in game two, but Alvin again rallied late. This time around it was enough, as the Dolphins erased a 5-2 deficit with six runs in the sixth inning.

The Bucs racked up 10 hits, including three hits for Boetjer. The second-year first baseman had two singles and a solo home run and drove in two runs. Gallamore had two singles, Wiese added a double, and Beckendorf singled and knocked in two runs.

Gallamore started for Blinn and worked 1 2/3 innings. She allowed two unearned runs, walked three, struck out four, and didn't allow a hit. Bracknell absorbed the loss after tossing 3 1/3 frames.

The Bucs return to the diamond when they visit 20th-ranked Galveston College for a South doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, in Galveston, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 national championships since 1987.
